Read this first

Hyundai's handbook describes each lamp by when it lights and when it blinks, and usually ends with 'we recommend that you have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer'. It rarely names a colour — only for the driver-assistance lamps, where the colour changes the meaning (Forward Safety: yellow when switched off or faulty, blinking red when it is braking). Its power steering is MDPS (Motor Driven Power Steering). Kia is part of the same group and uses most of the same lamps and names; this page is confirmed by a Hyundai handbook only.

Seat belt warning light

Hyundai calls it “Seat belt warning light”.

The seat belt is not fastened.

Airbag warning light

Hyundai calls it “Air bag warning light”.

On for about 3–6 seconds at start-up. At other times: an SRS fault — have it inspected.

Brake system warning light

Hyundai calls it “Parking brake & Brake fluid warning light”.

On with the parking brake applied. On with it released: brake fluid is low — stop somewhere safe, check the level; do not drive if there is a leak.

ABS warning light (anti-lock brakes)

Hyundai calls it “Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) warning light”.

An ABS fault. The ordinary hydraulic brakes still work.

Power steering warning light (EPS)

Hyundai calls it “Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) warning light”.

Stays on while driving: a power steering fault — have it inspected.

Battery / charging warning light

Hyundai calls it “Charging system warning light”.

An alternator or charging fault: stop somewhere safe, switch off, check the alternator belt.

Oil pressure warning light (oil can)

Hyundai calls it “Engine oil pressure warning light”.

Oil pressure is low: stop somewhere safe, check the level and top up. Driving on may cause engine failure.

Low engine oil level light

Hyundai calls it “Engine Oil Level Warning Light”.

The oil level should be checked: stop somewhere safe, check and add oil.

The coolant is extremely hot: do not keep driving an overheated engine.

Low fuel light

Hyundai calls it “Low fuel level warning light”.

The tank is nearly empty; running it low can make the engine misfire and damage the catalytic converter.

Check engine light (engine malfunction)

Hyundai calls it “Malfunction Indicator light (MIL)”.

A fault in the emission control system, the engine or the powertrain — have it inspected.

Water in fuel light (diesel)

Hyundai calls it “Fuel filter warning light (for diesel engine)”.

Water has collected in the fuel filter; engine power may drop. Have the dealer drain it.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF) light

Hyundai calls it “Exhaust system (DPF) warning light (for diesel engine)”.

Drive above 60 km/h for about 30 minutes (2nd gear or higher, 1250–2500 rpm). If it blinks after that, have it checked.

AdBlue (DEF) warning light

Hyundai calls it “SCR warning light (for diesel engine)”.

The urea (AdBlue) tank is nearly empty — refill as soon as possible.

Auto Hold light

Hyundai calls it “AUTO HOLD indicator light”.

White: Auto Hold is switched on. Green: it is holding the stopped car. Yellow: a fault.

Low tyre pressure light (TPMS)

Hyundai calls it “Low tire pressure warning light”.

One or more tyres are significantly under-inflated; the display shows which.

TPMS light (tyre pressure monitor fault)

Hyundai calls it “Low tire pressure warning light (blinking)”.

Blinks for about 60 seconds then stays on, or keeps blinking every 3 seconds: a TPMS fault.

Forward collision warning light

Hyundai calls it “Forward Safety warning light”.

Yellow: Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist is off, disabled or faulty. Blinking red: it is working.

Lane assist (lane keeping) light

Hyundai calls it “Lane Safety indicator light”.

Green: Lane Keeping Assist is ready or working. Yellow: switched off, disabled or faulty.

Hyundai calls it “Four Wheel Drive (4WD) warning light”.

Stability control light (ESC)

Hyundai calls it “Electronic Stability Control (ESC) indicator light”.

Blinks while ESC is working; stays on if ESC has a fault.

Immobiliser (security) light

Hyundai calls it “Immobilizer Indicator Light”.

On: the key is recognised and the engine can start. Blinking: the smart key is not in the car, or an immobiliser fault.

Glow plug light (diesel pre-heat)

Hyundai calls it “Glow indicator light (for diesel engine)”.

The diesel is pre-heating; start once it goes off. On or blinking when warm: a pre-heat fault.

Hill descent control light

Hyundai calls it “Downhill Brake Control (DBC) indicator light”.

On when DBC is switched on; blinks while it is braking; yellow means a DBC fault.

Idle Stop and Go has stopped the engine.

Frost / icy road warning (snowflake)

Hyundai calls it “Icy road warning light”.

Below 4 °C outside: a chime, and the lamp blinks then stays on. Avoid speeding and sudden braking or steering.
