Read this first

Every light below is confirmed by one Chevrolet handbook: the 2022 Equinox owner manual from Chevrolet's own site. GMC, Buick and Cadillac handbooks come from the same GM writing team and use many of the same lamp names, but this page checked only the Chevrolet one. GM's own names are the ones people search for: StabiliTrak is GM's word for electronic stability control, so the 'TCS/StabiliTrak light' is our stability control light, and 'StabiliTrak OFF' and 'Traction Off' are two separate lamps for switching it off. The check engine lamp flashing means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter: slow down, avoid hard acceleration and uphill grades, and if it keeps flashing stop, switch off for at least 10 seconds and restart. The handbook does not give colours for most lamps in its text; where it does (lane keep assist, cruise control) they are listed. This is a North American handbook.

Brake system warning light

Chevrolet calls it “Brake System Warning Light”.

On at start-up: have the brakes inspected right away. On while driving: pull off and stop carefully; the pedal may be harder to push or go closer to the floor. If it stays on, have the vehicle towed.

Parking brake light

Chevrolet calls it “Electric Parking Brake Light”.

On while the parking brake is applied. Flashing after release or while driving means an electric parking brake problem; a Driver Information Center message may also show.

ABS warning light (anti-lock brakes)

Chevrolet calls it “Antilock Brake System (ABS) Warning Light”.

On alone: regular brakes work but ABS does not. With the brake system warning light too: ABS is off and there is a problem with the regular brakes — see your dealer.

Check engine light (engine malfunction)

Chevrolet calls it “Malfunction Indicator Lamp (Check Engine Light)”.

Steady: a malfunction has been detected; check the fuel cap funnel adapter and fuel quality, then see your dealer if it stays on. Flashing: reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration and uphill grades; if it keeps flashing, park, switch off for at least 10 seconds and restart.

Battery / charging warning light

Chevrolet calls it “Charging System Light”.

On or on while driving: there may be a problem with the charging system; driving with it on could drain the battery. Turn off accessories such as the radio and air conditioner and have it checked.

Oil pressure warning light (oil can)

Chevrolet calls it “Engine Oil Pressure Light”.

On and stays on: oil is not flowing through the engine properly — the vehicle could be low on oil. Check the level; if it is correct and the pressure is still low, have it serviced.

Seat belt warning light

Chevrolet calls it “Driver Seat Belt Reminder Light”.

Flashes with a chime at start-up, then stays on until the driver's belt is buckled; the cycle may repeat while the vehicle moves unbuckled.

Airbag warning light

Chevrolet calls it “Airbag Readiness Light”.

Comes on for several seconds at start-up. If it stays on or comes on while driving, the airbags might not inflate in a crash, or could inflate without one — have the vehicle serviced right away.

Passenger airbag off light

Chevrolet calls it “Passenger Airbag Status Indicator (OFF)”.

OFF lit: the passenger sensing system has turned off the front outboard passenger frontal airbag. If both ON and OFF stay lit, or neither lights, see your dealer.

Stability control light (ESC)

Chevrolet calls it “Traction Control System (TCS)/StabiliTrak Light”.

Flashing: TCS and/or StabiliTrak/ESC is actively working. On and not flashing: the systems are not fully operational — adjust your driving and see your dealer if it persists.

Stability control off light (ESC OFF)

Chevrolet calls it “StabiliTrak OFF Light”.

On when StabiliTrak/ESC has been turned off; traction control is then off too and the systems do not assist in controlling the vehicle. (A separate Traction Off light shows when only TCS is off.)

Low tyre pressure light (TPMS)

Chevrolet calls it “Tire Pressure Light”.

Steady: one or more tires are significantly underinflated — stop as soon as possible and inflate to the label pressure. Flashing for about a minute then steady: a problem with the tire pressure monitor system.

Low fuel light

Chevrolet calls it “Low Fuel Warning Light”.

Comes on when the fuel gauge nears empty and goes off when fuel is added.

Immobiliser (security) light

Chevrolet calls it “Security Light”.

Comes on briefly as the engine starts. If it stays on and the engine does not start, there could be a problem with the theft-deterrent (immobilizer) system.

Lane assist (lane keeping) light

Chevrolet calls it “Lane Keep Assist (LKA) Light”.

White: LKA is on but not ready. Green: ready to assist. Amber: assisting. Flashing amber: a Lane Departure Warning — the lane marking has been crossed unintentionally.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) light

Chevrolet calls it “Adaptive Cruise Control Light”.

White when adaptive cruise control is on and ready; green when it is set and active.

Chevrolet calls it “High-Beam On Light”.

On while the high-beam headlamps are in use.

Chevrolet calls it “Front Fog Lamp Light”.

On while the fog lamps are on; goes out when they are turned off.
