Read this first

Peugeot's list is sorted by colour — red, orange, green, blue — and orange is what other makes call amber or yellow. Its STOP lamp is a red triangle with an exclamation mark that always comes with another lamp and a message: stop as soon as it is safe. Its spanner, labelled Service, is orange and means a minor fault with no lamp of its own, not a service reminder. Citroën, DS and Vauxhall's newer cars share the same Stellantis platform and most of these lamps; this page is confirmed by a Peugeot handbook only.

Master warning light (triangle with !)

Peugeot calls it “STOP”.

Red, with another lamp, a message and a beep: a serious engine, brake, steering, gearbox or electrical fault. Stop as soon as it is safe, then contact a dealer.

Engine coolant temperature warning light

Peugeot calls it “Maximum coolant temperature”.

Red: the cooling system is too hot. Stop, wait for the engine to cool before topping up.

Oil pressure warning light (oil can)

Peugeot calls it “Engine oil pressure”.

Red: a fault in engine lubrication. Stop, then contact a dealer.

Battery / charging warning light

Peugeot calls it “12 V battery charge”.

Red: the charging circuit is faulty — dirty terminals or a loose or broken alternator belt, for example.

Brake system warning light

Peugeot calls it “Braking”.

Red: the brake fluid level has dropped significantly. Stop, top up; if it persists, contact a dealer. The same lamp reports a brake-force distribution fault.

Parking brake light

Peugeot calls it “Electric parking brake”.

Red, lit: the electric parking brake is applied. Flashing: applying or releasing it has failed.

Door open light

Peugeot calls it “Door(s) open”.

Red: a door, the boot or the bonnet is not properly closed; a beep above 10 km/h.

Seat belt warning light

Peugeot calls it “Seat belts not fastened/unfastened”.

Red, with a rising beep: a seat belt is not fastened or has been unfastened.

Electric drive system fault light (EV and hybrid)

Peugeot calls it “System malfunction”.

Hybrid or electric: a fault in the electric motor or traction battery. Stop, then contact a dealer.

Charging cable connected light

Peugeot calls it “Cable connected”.

Hybrid or electric: the charging cable is connected; the car cannot be started until it is removed.

Spanner warning light (a fault, not a service reminder)

Peugeot calls it “Service”.

Orange: one or more minor faults with no lamp of their own; the message says which.

Foot on brake light (press the brake pedal)

Peugeot calls it “Foot on the brake”.

Orange: press the brake pedal, for example to leave P or to release the parking brake.

ABS warning light (anti-lock brakes)

Peugeot calls it “Anti-lock braking system (ABS)”.

Orange: an ABS fault. Normal braking remains; drive carefully at moderate speed.

Power steering warning light (EPS)

Peugeot calls it “Power steering”.

Orange: a minor power steering fault. Drive carefully at moderate speed.

Check engine light (engine malfunction)

Peugeot calls it “Engine self-diagnostic system”.

Orange, flashing: an engine management fault that risks destroying the catalytic converter. Lit: an emissions control fault.

Stability control light (ESC)

Peugeot calls it “Dynamic stability control (DSC) / Anti-slip regulation (ASR)”.

Orange, flashing: DSC/ASR is working on a loss of grip. Lit: a system fault.

Stability control off light (ESC OFF)

Peugeot calls it “Dynamic stability control (DSC) / Anti-slip regulation (ASR) — deactivated”.

Orange, lit: DSC/ASR is switched off. It comes back on at restart or above about 50 km/h.

Low tyre pressure light (TPMS)

Peugeot calls it “Under-inflation”.

Orange: one or more tyres are too low — check the pressures, then reset the system.

TPMS light (tyre pressure monitor fault)

Peugeot calls it “Under-inflation (flashing, then fixed, with Service)”.

Flashing then steady, with the Service lamp: the tyre pressure system is faulty and no longer monitoring.

Airbag warning light

Peugeot calls it “Airbags”.

Orange, with Service: an airbag or belt pretensioner is faulty.

Passenger airbag off light

Peugeot calls it “Front passenger airbag (OFF)”.

Orange: the front passenger airbag is off, so a rear-facing child seat may be fitted there.

Low fuel light

Peugeot calls it “Low fuel level”.

Orange, with a beep: about 6 litres left. Refuel without delay.

Reduced power (tortoise) light

Peugeot calls it “Tortoise mode with limited driving range”.

Electric: the traction battery is critically low and power decreases — charge now.

Forward collision warning light

Peugeot calls it “Collision Risk Alert / Active Safety Brake”.

Flashing: the car is braking to lessen a collision. Lit: switched off, sensor blocked, or a fault.

Auto stop-start light

Peugeot calls it “Stop & Start”.

Green: Stop & Start has put the engine in STOP mode; an orange version reports it off or faulty.

Peugeot calls it “Vehicle ready to drive”.

Hybrid or electric: the car is ready to drive; it goes out above about 5 km/h.
