Read this first

Every light below is confirmed by one Fiat handbook: the 2017 Tipo 5 door and Station Wagon owner handbook from Fiat's own aftersales site. Its table gives a name and meaning for each lamp but, for most, not its colour in words, so colours are left out where the text does not state them. Fiat's red brake lamp does two jobs: parking brake on, or brake fluid below the minimum. The oil pressure symbol, the handbook stresses, does not show the oil level: check it with the dipstick. Its engine lamp ('Injection / EOBD system failure') flashing means the catalytic converter may be damaged: ease off the accelerator until it stops flashing. Its 'DPF cleaning' symbol is not a fault — keep driving (about 15 minutes at 60 km/h above 2000 rpm is ideal) until it goes out. The handbook also prints lamps this site has no page for (bonnet or tailgate not shut, engine oil deteriorated, partial deactivation of active safety systems). Brake system warning light

Fiat calls it “Insufficient brake fluid / parking brake on”.

On when the brake fluid falls below the minimum (possibly a leak) — top up and, if it stays on, contact a Fiat dealership — or when the parking brake is engaged.

Power steering warning light (EPS)

Fiat calls it “Power steering failure”.

Stays on: you may have no steering assistance and steering takes more effort, though it is still possible. Contact a dealership as soon as possible.

Seat belt warning light

Fiat calls it “Seat belts not fastened”.

On when stationary with a belt unfastened; flashes with a buzzer once the car moves. Fasten the belt.

Engine coolant temperature warning light

Fiat calls it “Engine coolant temperature too high”.

The engine has overheated: in normal driving, stop, switch off and check the coolant level once cool; if it comes on again after restarting, contact a dealership.

Airbag warning light

Fiat calls it “Airbag failure”.

On constantly: a failure in the airbag system; the airbags or pretensioners may not deploy in an impact. Contact a dealership immediately before continuing.

Low tyre pressure light (TPMS)

Fiat calls it “iTPMS — tyre pressure low”.

On constantly: one or more tyres are below the recommended pressure or slowly losing it — restore the pressure, then run the Reset procedure. Flashing for about 75 seconds then on: the system is off or faulty.

ABS warning light (anti-lock brakes)

Fiat calls it “ABS failure”.

An ABS fault: the brakes keep their efficiency but without ABS. Drive carefully and contact a dealership as soon as possible.

Stability control light (ESC)

Fiat calls it “ESC system”.

Flashing: ESC is intervening in critical grip conditions. On and not going off with the engine running: an ESC failure — contact a dealership as soon as possible.

Check engine light (engine malfunction)

Fiat calls it “Injection / EOBD system failure”.

On while driving: the injection system is not working properly — drive at moderate speed and contact a dealership. Flashing: the catalytic converter may be damaged; release the accelerator until it stops flashing.

Glow plug light (diesel pre-heat)

Fiat calls it “Glow plug preheating”.

Diesel: on at ignition until the glow plugs are hot; start the engine once it goes off. Flashing: a preheating system failure.

Insufficient engine oil pressure: stop the engine immediately and do not use the car until it is fixed. It does not show the oil quantity — check the level manually.

Water in fuel light (diesel)

Fiat calls it “Water in diesel filter”.

Diesel: water in the diesel filter — contact a dealership as soon as possible to bleed the system. Right after refuelling, switch off at once: water has probably gone into the tank.

Diesel: the particulate filter needs to regenerate. Not a defect — keep driving (ideally 60 km/h above 2000 rpm, about 15 minutes) until it goes out.
