Read this first

Every light below is confirmed by one Jeep handbook: the 2018 Renegade owner's manual, hosted on jeep.com. It sorts lamps by colour — red, yellow, green, blue and white telltales — and gives a colour for each, listed below. Jeep's single red Brake Warning Light covers three things: the parking brake is on, the brake fluid is low, or a brake or brake-booster fault. The engine lamp is 'Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)'; flashing means severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur. The handbook also prints lamps this site has no page for yet — a red Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) light, a red oil temperature light, hood-open and liftgate-open lights and a loose fuel filler cap light — so they are left off this list. Dodge, Chrysler and Ram handbooks share many of these lamps but were not checked here.

Seat belt warning light

Jeep calls it “Seat Belt Reminder Warning Light”.

Flashes or stays on with a chime while the driver's belt is unbuckled after the bulb check.

Airbag warning light

Jeep calls it “Air Bag Warning Light”.

On for four to eight seconds at start-up. If it stays on, comes on while driving or does not come on, have the system inspected by an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Brake system warning light

Jeep calls it “Brake Warning Light”.

The parking brake is applied, the brake fluid is low, or there is a brake hydraulic or brake booster fault. Driving with it on is dangerous — have the vehicle checked immediately.

Oil pressure warning light (oil can)

Jeep calls it “Oil Pressure Warning Light”.

Low engine oil pressure: stop and shut off the engine as soon as possible, and do not drive until the cause is corrected. It does not show how much oil is in the engine.

Battery / charging warning light

Jeep calls it “Charging System Warning Light”.

On while driving: switch off nonessential electrical devices or raise engine speed at idle. If it stays on, the charging system has a problem — obtain service immediately.

Engine coolant temperature warning light

Jeep calls it “Engine Temperature Warning Light”.

The engine is overheating: pull over and stop, turn off the A/C, shift to NEUTRAL and idle. If the temperature does not return to normal, turn the engine off and call for service.

Power steering warning light (EPS)

Jeep calls it “Electric Power Steering Fail Warning”.

Door open light

Jeep calls it “Door Open Indicator Light”.

One or more doors are not fully closed.

Gearbox (transmission) warning light

Jeep calls it “Transmission Fault Warning Light”.

Comes on with a message and buzzer for a transmission fault; contact your dealer if the message remains after restarting the engine.

ABS warning light (anti-lock brakes)

Jeep calls it “Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) Indicator Light”.

Stays on after start-up or at road speed: ABS may be faulty and the brakes revert to standard non-anti-lock brakes. With the Brake Warning Light too: see a dealer immediately.

Low tyre pressure light (TPMS)

Jeep calls it “Tire Pressure Monitoring Indicator Light”.

A tire pressure is below the recommended value or slowly dropping — stop and check the tires. Flashing for about a minute then steady: the monitoring system has a fault.

Stability control light (ESC)

Jeep calls it “Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Indicator Light”.

On continuously with the engine running: an ESC malfunction. If it stays on over several ignition cycles, see your dealer as soon as possible.

Stability control off light (ESC OFF)

Jeep calls it “Electronic Stability Control (ESC) OFF Indicator Light”.

ESC has been switched off. It is back on at every ignition cycle.

Check engine light (engine malfunction)

Jeep calls it “Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)”.

On: have the vehicle serviced if it stays on — a loose gas cap or poor fuel can also light it. Flashing: severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur; immediate service is required.

Low fuel light

Jeep calls it “Low Fuel Indicator Light”.

Comes on at about 5 to 7 litres (1.3 to 1.8 US gallons) left and stays on until fuel is added.

Lane assist (lane keeping) light

Jeep calls it “LaneSense Indicator Light”.

Green when LaneSense is ready; solid yellow when it senses a lane drift; flashing yellow in a lane departure.

Bulb failure (exterior light) warning

Jeep calls it “Exterior Bulb Failure Indicator Light”.

One of the exterior bulbs has failed.

Forward collision warning light

Jeep calls it “Forward Collision Indicator Light”.

Warns of a possible collision with the vehicle in front. A separate Forward Collision Warning Off light shows when the system is switched off.

Turn signal indicator

Jeep calls it “Turn Signal Indicator Lights”.

The arrow flashes for the left or right turn signal selected.

Front fog light indicator

Jeep calls it “Front Fog Indicator Light”.

On while the front fog lights are on.
