Read this first

Every light below is confirmed by one MG handbook: the owner's manual for the facelifted MG ZS EV, from MG Motor UK's own site. It is an electric car, so it has no oil, coolant or engine lamps, but it has several that petrol cars lack: READY, a charging cable lamp, a low drive-battery lamp and a power-limited lamp. MG's 12-volt 'Low-voltage battery charging system' lamp is the usual battery light. The steering lamp flashing means a severe power steering failure and heavy steering: stop as soon as safety permits. The high-voltage battery malfunction lamp flashing means the battery is too hot: stop and leave the vehicle immediately. The handbook's table names each lamp but does not give colours in its text. Petrol MG models (ZS, HS, MG3) have their own handbooks with engine lamps that this page does not cover.

Turn signal indicator

MG calls it “Direction Indicators”.

Flashes with the turn signal; both flash with the hazard lamps. Flashing very rapidly: a turn signal bulb on that side has failed.

Airbag warning light

MG calls it “Airbag Warning”.

The SRS or a seat belt has failed and may not deploy in an accident: as soon as conditions permit, stop, switch the power system OFF and contact an MG Authorised Repairer immediately.

Seat belt warning light

MG calls it “Seat Belt Unfastened Warning”.

Low tyre pressure light (TPMS)

MG calls it “Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning”.

On: a tyre pressure is low — check the pressures. Flashing and then steady: the system has a fault.

Power steering warning light (EPS)

MG calls it “Electric Power Steering (EPS)/Electronic Steering Column Lock (ESCL) Warning”.

On: a power steering failure with reduced assistance — stop as soon as safety permits. Flashing: a severe failure and steering is hard, or a steering column lock fault.

Stability control light (ESC)

MG calls it “Hill Descent Control (HDC) On/Malfunction Indicator”.

On: HDC is on standby. Flashing: the car is under HDC control. A separate state shows an HDC fault.

MG calls it “Low-voltage Battery Charging System Malfunction Warning”.

On after starting: the 12 V charging system has failed. Flashing: the 12 V battery is low and some electrical devices are being limited — start the vehicle to charge it.
