Read this first

Every light below is confirmed by one Suzuki handbook: the Vitara series manual Suzuki Australia publishes on its own owner's manual site. One manual covers petrol, mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid Vitaras, so many lamps are marked 'if equipped'. Suzuki's names to look for: ESP® for stability control, ENG A-STOP for the engine auto stop-start, Dual sensor brake support for its automatic emergency braking, and an 'oil change request light' that is its oil-life service reminder. Most lamps come on briefly at switch-on so you can check they work; the handbook's advice when one stays on is almost always to have the car inspected by a Suzuki dealer. The transaxle lamp is the exception to wait on: if it comes on or blinks, stop in a safe place and contact a dealer.

Brake system warning light

Suzuki calls it “Brake system warning light”.

On while driving: there may be something wrong with the brake system — pull off the road and stop carefully.

ABS warning light (anti-lock brakes)

Suzuki calls it “Anti-lock brake system (ABS) warning light”.

If it stays on after a restart, something is wrong with the ABS. On together with the brake system warning light: pull off and stop carefully.

Stability control light (ESC)

Suzuki calls it “ESP® warning light”.

Blinks 5 times per second while stability control, traction control or hill descent control is working — drive carefully. Staying on: something is wrong with the ESP® systems.

Stability control off light (ESC OFF)

Suzuki calls it “ESP® OFF indicator light”.

Comes on and stays on when you push the ESP® OFF switch to turn the ESP® systems (other than ABS) off.

Hill descent control light

Suzuki calls it “Hill descent control indicator light”.

On when you push the hill descent control switch and its operating conditions are met (if equipped).

Oil pressure warning light (oil can)

Suzuki calls it “Engine oil pressure warning light”.

Listed among the warning lights: low engine oil pressure.

Battery / charging warning light

Suzuki calls it “Charge warning light”.

On with the engine running: something is wrong with the battery charging system — have it inspected by a Suzuki dealer immediately.

Seat belt warning light

Suzuki calls it “Driver's seat belt reminder light / Front passenger's seat belt reminder light”.

A front seat belt is not fastened.

Airbag warning light

Suzuki calls it “AIRBAG light”.

Not lighting at switch-on, staying on more than 10 seconds or coming on while driving: the airbag or pretensioner system may not work — have both inspected.

Check engine light (engine malfunction)

Suzuki calls it “Malfunction indicator light”.

The emission control system needs servicing. Driving on while it is on or blinking can permanently damage the emission controls.

Gearbox (transmission) warning light

Suzuki calls it “Transaxle warning light”.

A problem with the automatic transaxle or Auto Gear Shift — if it comes on or blinks, stop in a safe place and contact a Suzuki dealer.

Suzuki calls it “Immobilizer/keyless push start system warning light”.

Door open light

Suzuki calls it “Open door warning light”.

Stays on until all doors, including the tailgate, are closed; a ding sounds if the car moves with one open.

Low fuel light

Suzuki calls it “Low fuel warning light”.

Fill the tank immediately; a ding sounds once when it comes on.

Power steering warning light (EPS)

Suzuki calls it “Electric power steering light”.

A problem with the electric power steering; assist can also be limited for a while after the wheel is held at full lock.

Forward collision warning light

Suzuki calls it “Dual sensor brake support indicator light”.

Blinks rapidly when automatic braking works. Stays on when the dual sensor brake support stops working (if equipped).

Lane assist (lane keeping) light

Suzuki calls it “Lane departure warning indicator light”.

Blinks when the lane departure warning or vehicle swaying warning is working (if equipped).

Suzuki calls it “Adaptive cruise control system warning light”.

Comes on if there is a problem with the four-mode 4WD system (if equipped).

Auto stop-start light

Suzuki calls it ““ENG A-STOP” indicator light”.

The engine auto stop-start system has stopped the engine (if equipped). A separate “ENG A-STOP OFF” light shows the system is switched off.

Service due (spanner) light

Suzuki calls it “Oil change request light”.

The oil life monitoring system says to change the engine oil and oil filter — do it immediately (if equipped).

Electric drive system fault light (EV and hybrid)

Suzuki calls it “Hybrid system warning light”.

A malfunction in the strong hybrid system, high voltage power system or brake booster vacuum system — have it inspected by a Suzuki dealer (if equipped).
