4WD / AWD warning light

A fault in the four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive system. Many such systems drive two wheels most of the time and send power to all four only when grip runs short — Kia's 4WD Auto works that way — so with a fault the extra grip may not be there when you need it.

What to do

Have it checked soon; Kia and Hyundai both say have the dealer inspect it. Until then drive as if the car had two-wheel drive: take snow, mud, wet grass, steep gravel and towing more cautiously. It is not the 4WD LOCK indicator, which only shows that lock mode is on — Kia says lock mode switches off above about 30 km/h (19 mph), and Hyundai says not to use it on dry paved roads.

Makes differ: what this light means on your car, the other colours it may use for the symbol and what the car wants you to do are set by the manufacturer, so your car's owner's manual is the authority.

Where makes differ

Kia's sheet draws it in amber and lights it for a few seconds at start-up as a check. Hyundai's 2025 Tucson calls it the 4WD warning light and its 2026 Palisade (US) the AWD warning light; both say have the system inspected.

Not defined by regulation: a maker convention

Neither US FMVSS 101 (Tables 1 and 2) nor UN Regulation No. 121 lists this light, so no rule fixes its symbol or its colour. What follows is what the makers cited below say; other makes, and other model years of the same make, may draw it differently.
