Auto stop-start light

The automatic stop-start system (Kia and Hyundai: ISG, Idle Stop and Go) has switched the engine off while the car is stopped, to save fuel. It restarts by itself — on Kia's manual-gearbox cars when you press the clutch. Amber: the conditions for stop-start are not met, or the system has a fault.

What to do

Green needs nothing: the engine is off on purpose. Amber that goes out again only means stop-start is waiting for its conditions. Amber that stays on, or will not go out when you press the stop-start button, needs a dealer check. Hyundai notes that other warning lights (ABS, ESC, power steering, parking brake) may flash for a few seconds as the engine restarts because of the dip in battery voltage, and that this is not a fault.

Makes differ: what this light means on your car, the other colours it may use for the symbol and what the car wants you to do are set by the manufacturer, so your car's owner's manual is the authority.

Where makes differ

Kia's Auto Stop icon is green while the engine is stopped, blinks for 5 seconds as it restarts, and is amber when conditions are not met. Hyundai's AUTO STOP indicator lights in Idle Stop mode and turns white as the engine restarts.

Not defined by regulation: a maker convention

Neither US FMVSS 101 (Tables 1 and 2) nor UN Regulation No. 121 lists this light, so no rule fixes its symbol or its colour. What follows is what the makers cited below say; other makes, and other model years of the same make, may draw it differently.

FMVSS 101 and UN R121 define the engine start and stop controls, not an automatic stop indicator.
