Read this first

This is the handbook of Nissan's electric LEAF, so as well as the usual lamps it has the electric-car ones: READY to drive, plug-in, power limitation, low battery charge and the electric vehicle system warning. It has two brake lamps: a red BRAKE lamp for the hydraulic brakes — stop immediately — and a yellow one for the regenerative and electronic brake system. The master warning light is yellow or red and always comes with a message on the display. Petrol and diesel Nissans share the common lamps but not the electric ones.

Brake system warning light

Nissan calls it “BRAKE warning light (red)”.

Red: the hydraulic brakes may not be working, or brake fluid is low. Stop immediately and contact a dealer; have the car towed if in doubt.

Master warning light (triangle with !)

Nissan calls it “Master warning light (red/yellow)”.

Red or yellow, always with a message on the Vehicle Information Display that says what is wrong.

ABS warning light (anti-lock brakes)

Nissan calls it “Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning light”.

On while driving: the ABS may not be working. Brakes work normally without anti-lock.

Power steering warning light (EPS)

Nissan calls it “Electric power steering warning light”.

Power assistance stops; you keep control but steering takes more effort. Have it checked.

Stability control light (ESC)

Nissan calls it “Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) warning light”.

Blinks while ESP works, near the limit of grip. Steady with ESP on: fail-safe mode — have it checked.

Stability control off light (ESC OFF)

Nissan calls it “Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) off indicator light”.

ESP has been switched off in the Vehicle Information Display.

Seat belt warning light

Nissan calls it “Seat belt warning light”.

On while any occupant is unbuckled; above 15 km/h it flashes and a chime sounds for at least 95 seconds.

Airbag warning light

Nissan calls it “Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) air bag warning light”.

Goes off after about 7 seconds. If it stays on, flashes or never lights, the airbags or pre-tensioners may not work — have it checked.

Passenger airbag off light

Nissan calls it “Front passenger air bag status light”.

On when the front passenger airbag is switched off.

Battery / charging warning light

Nissan calls it “12-volt battery charge warning light”.

The DC/DC converter that charges the 12-volt battery has a fault: stop in a safe place and contact a dealer.

Electric drive system fault light (EV and hybrid)

Nissan calls it “Electric vehicle system warning light”.

A fault in the motor and inverter, charger, Li-ion battery, cooling or shift control. Contact a dealer.

Reduced power (tortoise) light

Nissan calls it “Power limitation indicator light”.

Motor power is reduced: battery very low or cold, the system hot after long climbs, or a fault.

Low drive battery light (electric cars)

Nissan calls it “Low battery charge warning light”.

The Li-ion battery is getting low; the yellow master warning lights too. Charge as soon as possible.

Nissan calls it “Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians (VSP) OFF indicator light”.

The pedestrian warning sound is switched off; lit while it is on means a fault.
