LG dishwasher error codes

14 codes that LG publishes for its dishwashers, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Switch off and unplug before checking. Anything electrical, anything to do with gas, and any water leak at the mains: call a technician. Codes that need one are marked Technician.

Read this first

LG dishwashers show two-letter codes (IE, OE, bE …) and, on models with Dynamic Heat Dry, three-character F codes (F31, F35, F37). Every code below is on LG UK’s own “Guide to Error Codes”, which warns that codes can differ between models: check your manual — models differ. Only IE, OE, bE, nE and CL come with things you can do yourself; LG sends the rest straight to its service.

IE No water coming in

What it means
Water inlet error: the set amount of water has not reached the tub. The dishwasher may chime.
Likely cause
A water outage, a bent or squashed inlet hose, or a closed inlet valve (often closed by the installer after a new install or a move).
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check that water runs from the kitchen and bathroom taps; if not, it is a water outage.
  • Straighten the inlet hose and move anything pressing on it.
  • Under the sink, open the dishwasher’s inlet valve and the shut-off valve above it by turning them anti-clockwise.
When to call a technician
If the valves are open and IE persists, book an LG service technician (or call your installer after a new installation).

OE Not draining

What it means
Water outlet error: the tub has not fully drained.
Likely cause
Food residue clogging the filter, or a squashed or bent drain hose.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Wait 30 minutes after a programme so the tub is not hot, then take out the lower rack, turn the filter handle anti-clockwise and lift the filter out.
  • Separate the inner filter from the steel filter, rinse both under running water and refit, turning clockwise until it clicks. LG suggests doing this every one or two weeks.
  • Straighten any bent part of the drain hose; its end should be at least 30 cm above the floor.
  • To empty a lot of standing water: switch on and hold Start for at least 3 seconds to force a 2–3 minute drain. A little water below the filter is normal.
When to call a technician
If water keeps pooling above the filter, book an LG service technician.

AE FE Leak or overfilling

What it means
The dishwasher has detected a leak or more water than it should have. It keeps draining to protect the appliance and the floor.
Likely cause
Over-sudsing from washing-up liquid, a unit that is not level or a door out of line, a leak, or water poured into the Heat Dry blower instead of the salt (water-softener) inlet.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Use only dishwasher detergent, never washing-up liquid, and load large plates and pots upside down.
When to call a technician
Technician If the unit is not level, or there is no water on the floor but the code stays, unplug the dishwasher and book an LG service technician. If water went into the Heat Dry blower of a built-in unit, do not pull it out: book a technician.

bE Too many suds

What it means
Bubble error: the dishwasher has detected over-sudsing and stops to prevent a leak.
Likely cause
Washing-up liquid instead of dishwasher detergent, or too much detergent.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Stop using washing-up liquid; use powder or tablets made for dishwashers, or only a little liquid dishwasher detergent.
  • To clear the suds: set rinse aid to L0, add no detergent, put a bowl with 200 ml of milk in the middle of the upper rack and run the Standard programme with Extra Dry and Rinse. Repeat if suds remain, then set the rinse aid back.
  • To test it: run the machine empty without detergent. If bE and suds appear, the detergent was the cause.
When to call a technician
If bE shows with no suds, book an LG service technician.

nE Vario pump (impeller) not turning

What it means
The impeller of the Vario pump is not spinning normally.
Likely cause
Dishes touching the impeller, or a fault in it.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Rearrange the dishes so nothing touches the impeller, and restart.
When to call a technician
If nE persists, book an LG service technician.

CL Control lock is on

What it means
Not a fault: the control panel is locked, so buttons, programmes and options do nothing. It stays on after the dishwasher switches off.
Likely cause
Control (child) lock was switched on.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • With the dishwasher on, hold the CL button(s) for 3 seconds; on models without a CL button LG names Half Load and Energy Saver held together.
When to call a technician
No technician needed unless the panel stays locked after that.

tE Temperature sensor fault

What it means
A problem with the temperature sensor, such as a contact problem or a failed sensor.
Likely cause
The temperature sensor.

HE Water not heating

What it means
Heater error: the water supplied to the dishwasher is not being heated.
Likely cause

LE Wash motor fault

What it means
The cleaning (wash) motor is not working normally.
Likely cause
The wash motor.

PE Water-level sensor fault

What it means
A problem with the sensor that measures the water level to prevent leaks. LG says PE applies to certain older models.
Likely cause
The water-level sensor.

F31 Heat Dry fan not working

What it means
On models with Dynamic Heat Dry: the Heat Dry fan motor does not run.
Likely cause
The fan motor or one of its parts.

F35 Heat Dry temperature not measured

What it means
On models with Dynamic Heat Dry: the temperature of the Heat Dry parts cannot be measured.
Likely cause
The Heat Dry heater or its temperature sensor.

F37 Auto Open Door not working

What it means
The Auto Open Door feature does not work.
Likely cause
Something in the way of the door, or the auto-open parts.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure nothing near the door is getting in its way.
When to call a technician
If F37 persists, book an LG service technician.
