This page covers US (North American) models: GE Appliances dishwashers with electronic controls, sold in the United States and Canada. GE says its fault codes (also called error or function codes) exist mainly to help its repair technicians, that a few point to something you can fix yourself, and that most need a technician. Not every code is on every model: models differ, so check your owner’s manual. Several codes are the dishwasher telling you something rather than a fault — PF after a power cut, Cup Open for an unlatched detergent cup. GE’s general advice for any code is to cut the power for a minute or two; if that does not clear it, book service.

C1 Pump-out over 2 minutes

What it means
Pumping out the water during a drain has taken more than 2 minutes.
Likely cause
A clogged air gap, a kinked or badly placed drain hose, or a blocked sink disposer.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Clean the air gap on the sink.
  • Straighten or reposition the drain hose.
  • Run the disposer to clear it.
When to call a technician
If it keeps happening, book a technician.

C2 Pump-out over 7 minutes

What it means
The whole pump-out has taken more than 7 minutes.
Likely cause
GE gives no cause; like C1 it points at slow draining.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Press Reset to stop the beeping.
When to call a technician
If it comes back, book a technician.

C3 Will not drain

What it means
The dishwasher will not drain.
Likely cause
Not stated by GE for this code.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Switch the dishwasher off at the circuit breaker for about 30 seconds, then back on, and reset it: GE says this sometimes clears the code.
When to call a technician
If it persists, book a technician.

C4 Filled twice / float stuck

What it means
The dishwasher filled twice after a power failure, the float switch is stuck or failed, or the drain or sump is clogged.
Likely cause
A stuck float, or debris in the sump.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Touch Start, then Cancel/Reset.
  • Tap the float cover — the plastic cup-shaped cover in the front left corner of the tub floor — to free the float.
  • Check the sump at the back of the tub floor (it looks like an upside-down silverware basket) for debris.
When to call a technician
If it persists, book a technician.

C5 Pump-out too short

What it means
The pump-out time was too short.
Likely cause
Water supply off, or a stuck float.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure the water supply is on and run the same cycle again.
  • Tap the float cover in the front left corner of the tub floor to free the float.
When to call a technician
If it keeps happening, book a technician.

C6 Water too cool

What it means
The water coming in is too cold: GE says it should be at least 120 °F (49 °C).
Likely cause
A low water-heater setting, a long cold run in the pipe, or hot water being used elsewhere.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Run the hot tap nearest the dishwasher before starting, to clear cold water from the pipe.
  • Turn up the water heater.
  • Avoid running the washing machine or showers at the same time.
  • Choose options that make the cycle longer, which adds heat.
When to call a technician
No technician is needed if warmer water clears it; if it persists, book a technician.

C7 Temperature sensor circuit

What it means
The water temperature sensor’s circuit has stopped working.
Likely cause
A faulty temperature sensor or its circuit.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Switch the dishwasher off at the circuit breaker for about 30 seconds, then back on, and reset it: GE says this sometimes clears the code.
When to call a technician

C8 Detergent cup blocked

What it means
The detergent cup cannot open fully.
Likely cause
Something — a utensil, a pan — in the way of the cup lid.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Move the item blocking the cup, close and latch the door, and wait 30 seconds for the cup to open.
When to call a technician
No technician is needed if moving the item clears it; if not, book a technician.

FTD F56 Failure to drain

What it means
The dishwasher did not drain.
Likely cause
A blocked drain hose, air gap or disposer.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the drain hose, the air gap and the disposer.
When to call a technician
If they are clear and it still does not drain, book a technician.

H2O Low water

Written H20 on the display.

What it means
The dishwasher is getting too little water, or none, in the timed fill. GE says it happens most after a first run, plumbing work, or the supply being turned off.
Likely cause
The hot-water valve under the sink not fully open, low pressure, or a dishwasher that is not level.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Open the hot-water valve under the sink nearest the dishwasher all the way.
  • Check that the inlet hose is not kinked.
  • Check the dishwasher is level.
  • Clear the code by selecting another cycle option, then setting it back.
  • If H2O shows only on the 1-Hour Wash cycle, the other cycles can still be used until service.
When to call a technician
If supply and pressure are fine, the valve is fully open and the dishwasher is level, book a technician.

999 Leak detected, or control needs a reset

What it means
On models with Floor Protect (leak alert), a possible leak: the dishwasher will not start. On the other models GE lists (such as GDT225, PDT145 and ZDT165), the control needs a reset; the display may flash.
Likely cause
A leak, on Floor Protect models; otherwise a control that needs resetting.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Floor Protect models: do not keep using it — the dishwasher will not start.
  • Other models: press and hold Cycle Select and Start together for 5 seconds, until 999 goes; then press any button. A blank display or a cycle time such as 130 is normal afterwards.
When to call a technician
On a Floor Protect model, book a technician. On others, if the reset does not clear it, book a technician.

LEAK DETECTED Leak detected

What it means
On models with leak detection, a possible leak: the cycle is cancelled.
Likely cause
A leak inside the dishwasher.
What you can safely check

Nothing for the owner to check: this one is for a technician.

When to call a technician

PrS Pressure sensor signal

What it means
The pressure sensor is sending the control an invalid signal: the cycle cannot start, or cancels.
Likely cause
Most likely the wiring harness or the sensor, GE says.
What you can safely check

Nothing for the owner to check: this one is for a technician.

PF Power failure

What it means
The dishwasher lost power.
Likely cause
A power cut.
What you can safely check

  • Select the cycle and options again and press Start.
When to call a technician
No technician is needed for a power cut.

Cup Open Detergent cup not closed

What it means
A reminder that the detergent cup is open: add detergent and latch it. The cycle will not start.
Likely cause
The detergent cup was left open.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Add detergent and latch the cup, or press Start again without opening the door to override.
When to call a technician
If the message persists with the cup latched, book a technician.
