Whirlpool US dishwasher error codes

14 codes that Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana publish for their dishwashers, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

This page covers US (North American) models: the built-in dishwashers Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana sell in the United States and Canada. Their codes have two parts, F for the function and E for the error: F9 E1, for example. Models with a display show the code; models without one flash it on the Clean light — count the flashes, a 1–2 second pause, count again, then a longer pause of about 5 seconds before it repeats, so 7 flashes then 1 flash is F7 E1. Whirlpool’s help site lists these codes; Maytag’s and Amana’s help sites carry the same list under their own names, and so does KitchenAid’s, another Whirlpool Corporation brand. For most codes the only owner step is a 30-second power reset; if the code returns, it needs a technician. Models differ, so check your owner’s manual. F9E1 Long drain: not draining

What it means
The dishwasher is taking too long to pump the water out.
Likely cause
A clogged filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, a blocked sink disposer (or its knockout plug still in place on a new installation), or a clogged air gap.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Take out the filter and rinse it clean under running water.
  • Check the drain hose from the back of the dishwasher to the sink for kinks, pinches and clogs.
  • If it drains into a sink disposer, run the disposer; on a new installation, make sure the knockout plug was removed.
  • If there is an air gap on the sink, clear it following its maker’s instructions.
When to call a technician
If it still will not drain, book a technician.

F9E2 Drain motor error

What it means
Whirlpool names the drain motor: the pump that empties the dishwasher.
Likely cause
A drain pump fault, or a drain that is blocked, kinked or wrongly routed.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • New installation: make sure the disposer knockout plug has been removed, and the drain hose runs on the correct side, inside the frame.
  • Check the disposer and drain for clogs and straighten a kinked drain hose.
  • Reset the control: unplug the dishwasher for 30 seconds, or, if it is hard-wired, switch off its breaker at the electrical panel for 30 seconds, then restore power.
When to call a technician

F8E4 Water in the drip tray

What it means
Water has been found in the drip tray under the dishwasher: a leak.
Likely cause
A leaking water connection, or the float switch in the tray.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Empty the drip tray.
  • Make sure the float switch is connected.
  • Check the water connections for leaks.
When to call a technician
If water keeps reaching the tray, book a technician.

What it means
The dishwasher is not detecting water coming in.
Likely cause
The water supply to the dishwasher is off, or the supply hose is kinked.
What you can safely check

What it means
An electrical fault in the fill (inlet) valve that lets water in.
Likely cause
A faulty inlet valve or its connection.
What you can safely check

What it means
Whirlpool names the water float switch, the overfill guard.
Likely cause
A dishwasher that is not level can trip the float (overfill) switch; otherwise the switch itself.

What it means
Whirlpool names the thermistor (temperature sensor) or the OWI sensor, which checks how dirty the water is.
