Whirlpool US oven error codes

162 codes that Whirlpool and Maytag publish for their ovens, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

This page covers US models: the ranges (freestanding and slide-in cookers) and wall ovens that Whirlpool and Maytag sell in the United States and Canada. Whirlpool’s product-help site has one page per range code, and Maytag’s carries the same pages under its own name. Codes come in several shapes: F plus a number (F1, F01), F plus a dash (F1-1, F9-2), two parts (F3 E0), or four characters on some displays (1d11, 9d21). For almost every fault code Whirlpool gives one owner step: switch the range off at the circuit breaker for one minute, switch it back on and watch for a minute; if the code returns, the part it names needs a technician. Wall ovens have their own list and some codes differ: on a wall oven F1 E0 points at the touchpad, F1 E5 at the microwave of a combination oven, and F7 E0 and F7 E1 at a steam oven’s water level and boiler sensor, where a range means the oven control or the door latch. The wall-oven codes that the range list does not have are at the end, marked “Wall oven”; for the others on a wall oven, check the wall-oven list linked below. A code does not carry across makes: F3 means something else on a GE or a Frigidaire.

F0 E0 Fault the control cannot name

What it means
Whirlpool says the oven control has found a problem it cannot identify.

F2 E1 Keypad fault, or cooktop grates not sitting right

What it means
Whirlpool lists a keypad, control or wiring fault, and first asks whether the cooktop grates are installed correctly.
Likely cause
Grates put back the wrong way round or not level; otherwise the keypad, the control or their wiring.
What you can safely check

  • When the range is cool, rock each grate corner to corner and side to side. If a grate wobbles it may be in backwards: swap the grates round so they sit level.

The oven did not reach self-clean temperature within 30 minutes.

What it means
The range could not connect to your wireless router (FC E7: it reached the router but not the internet).
Likely cause
A connection time-out, weak signal, a failed router, or the range’s Wi-Fi module or its wiring.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Reset the range’s power at the circuit breaker(s) for one minute.
  • Restart your router: unplug it for 2 minutes and plug it back in, then switch the range off at the breaker for 2 minutes and back on.
  • Take your phone to the range: if it shows a weak signal there, try moving the router, a compatible signal extender, or ask your internet provider.

FC E8 Wi-Fi registration error

What it means
Registration in the app failed.
Likely cause
A mistyped SAID number, or the wrong appliance type or model number chosen at the start of registration.

C81 C82 C83 Cooktop overheated

What it means
A cooking zone on the cooktop overheated and its automatic shut-off switched it off.
Likely cause
Overheating on the cooktop surface.
What you can safely check

  • Wait 5 minutes for the cooktop to cool, then turn it back on and check it works.

H Hot cooktop warning

What it means
Not a fault: an H in a cooking zone’s heat-setting window means that zone is still too hot to touch, even though it is switched off.
Likely cause
Residual heat after cooking.

  • If the H stays lit or flashes after the cooktop is cold, reset the power at the circuit breaker(s) for one minute.

ES E5 Energy Save mode (some models)

What it means
Not a fault: the control is in Energy Save mode. After 5 idle minutes the display shows ES, then On, twice, and goes blank until you press a key or open the door.
Likely cause
Energy Save was switched on (hold CLOCK for 10 seconds).
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • To switch Energy Save off, hold CLOCK for 10 seconds, with the oven idle and the time of day showing, until the display shows ES and then Off.
  • Any key brings the time of day back while it is on.

LOC Controls and door locked

What it means
Not a fault: the control lock is on. The keys do nothing and the oven door is locked; LOC shows whenever a key is pressed.
Likely cause
Someone held START/ENTER for 5 seconds (the key and hold time vary by model).
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • With the oven and timer off, touch and hold START/ENTER for 5 seconds; a tone sounds and LOC goes out. Check your manual for your model’s key.
  • If it will not unlock, reset the power at the circuit breaker(s) for one minute.

PSH PUSH Press Start

What it means
Not a fault: you set a function but did not press Start within 5 seconds. After a minute without Start the setting is cancelled and the clock comes back.

Lo Pre Oven still heating up

What it means
Not a fault: the oven is below 170°F or preheating. On some models the display then counts up in 5° steps and beeps when the set temperature is reached.
Likely cause
The oven is preheating.

F9 F9 E0 Wall oven: wired wrongly, or noise on the supply

What it means
On a wall oven, Whirlpool says this most often means the oven is wired incorrectly at the home’s supply or at its hard-wired connection, for example L2 and N swapped. It can also appear after a power cut with a lot of line “noise”, or if keys were pressed within 10 seconds of the power coming back.

Wiring at the supply or the hard-wire connection; supply noise; keys pressed too soon after power-up.
