Bosch oven error codes

16 codes that Bosch and Siemens publish for their ovens, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Switch off and unplug before checking. Anything electrical, anything to do with gas, and any water leak at the mains: call a technician. Codes that need one are marked Technician.

Read this first

Bosch, Neff and Siemens ovens are all made by BSH, and the codes below come from two of its brands: Bosch’s own oven manuals and US support page, and Siemens UK’s oven troubleshooting page (which also covers Siemens steam ovens — the E51-16, E8 and E845–E872 codes are for ovens with a water tank). Older Bosch ovens show three characters such as E011; current Bosch and Siemens ovens show four digits such as E0111 or D0111, and their manuals do not list them one by one (see below). Neff’s UK support page lists no codes and sends every code to an engineer, so on a Neff oven use this page as a guide and your manual as the authority.

E011 A button pressed too long or stuck

What it means
A button was pressed for too long, or it has jammed.
Likely cause
Something resting on the control panel, dirt around a button, or a button that is stuck down.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Press every button once, one at a time.
  • Check that the buttons are clean and that nothing covers them.
When to call a technician
If the message stays, call a technician (Bosch’s after-sales service).

E115 Oven too hot

Siemens lists the same code with a key symbol next to it.

What it means
The temperature in the cooking compartment is too high.
Likely cause
The oven has overheated; the door locks while the code is shown.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Wait until the cooking compartment has cooled down.
  • Clear the message with the clock (0) button.
When to call a technician
If the code comes back after that, call a technician (Bosch’s after-sales service).

E11 Touch keys not working properly

What it means
The touch keys are not operating properly (Bosch US ovens).
Likely cause
Bosch says this may be condensation on the keypad.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Clean the control panel with a dry cloth.
  • Switch off the fuse in the fuse box, and switch it back on after 10 seconds.
When to call a technician
If E11 stays, call a technician (Bosch customer support).

F8 Automatic switch-off

What it means
Automatic switch-off has been activated: the oven has stopped heating.
Likely cause
The oven’s automatic switch-off has been triggered; Bosch’s table gives no further cause.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Turn the function selector to the off position, then set the oven again.
When to call a technician
No technician needed for F8 on its own; if the oven will not heat after being reset, call a technician.

E0532 E05-32 Button pressed too long or jammed

What it means
A button was pressed for too long, or it has jammed (Siemens ovens).
Likely cause
A button held down, covered or stuck.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Press all the buttons individually.
When to call a technician

Er11 Button pressed too long or jammed

What it means
A button was pressed for too long, or it has jammed (Siemens ovens that show Er codes).
Likely cause
A button held down, covered or stuck.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Press all the buttons individually.

Er2 Wrong mains connection

What it means
The oven is wrongly connected to the mains.
Likely cause
An installation fault in the electrical connection.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Switch off the fuse in the fuse box.
When to call a technician
Technician Have the oven connected correctly by an electrician — Siemens says so for this code. Do not use it until then.

Er3 Electronics too hot (normal)

What it means
The electronics are overheating; the cooling fan is running.
Likely cause
Siemens says this is normal operating behaviour, not a technical fault.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Wait: when the electronics have cooled down, Er3 goes out and the oven carries on heating.
When to call a technician
No technician needed: Siemens calls this normal.

E5116 E51-16 Air in the steam system (first use)

What it means
A fault on steam ovens that can occur at the first start-up, because there is still air in the system.
Likely cause
Air trapped in the water system of a new oven.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Acknowledge the fault with the ON/OFF button if E5116 is still shown, then switch the oven on.
  • Select Top/bottom heating at 80 °C with Low added steam, and end it after about 5–10 minutes.
  • Then select Steam at 100 °C or reheat at 120 °C (depending on the oven) and end that after about 5–10 minutes too.
  • If E5116 appears again, repeat the process once more.
When to call a technician
If it still appears after the second run, call a technician (Siemens customer service).

E8 Steam function defective

What it means
The steam-supporting function is defective.
Likely cause
A fault in the steam system; the rest of the oven still works.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Press the clock function button: the functions that do not use steam can be used as normal.
When to call a technician
Steam will not work until it is repaired: call a technician (Siemens customer service).

E845 E870 E871 E872 Pump drawing air — water tank

What it means
The pump has pumped air several times in a row.
Likely cause
The water tank is empty or not pushed fully in.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Press the clock function button.
  • Fill the water tank and push it in all the way.
When to call a technician
If the code comes back with a full tank pushed fully in, call a technician (Siemens customer service).

A code that is not listed here

Current Bosch manuals (for example the HBG7741.1A) do not list individual codes: a code of letters and numbers such as E0111 or D0111 means “the electronics have detected a fault”. Switch the oven off and on again; if the fault was a one-off the message disappears. If it appears again, call the after-sales service and give them the exact code. Older Bosch manuals say the same for any E code not listed: press the clock (0) button to clear it, reset the time, and call the after-sales service if it comes back.
