Bosch dishwasher error codes

32 codes that Bosch publishes for its dishwashers, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Read this first

Bosch dishwashers show codes in two formats. Newer models (the manual cited here is the SMV4HVX32E) show a code such as E:24-00 that lights up alternately with the remaining time; older and US models show a short code such as E15 or E24. Both are listed, from Bosch's own manual and Bosch's own error-code page. Neff and Siemens dishwashers are built by the same group (BSH) and usually share the codes, but the sources here are Bosch's: check your Neff or Siemens manual before relying on them.

E:21-60 Limescale on the heating element

What it means
The dishwasher has detected a calcified heating element.
Likely cause
Hard water without enough water softening: limescale has built up on the heater.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Descale the dishwasher.
  • Run the dishwasher with its water-softening system in use from now on.
When to call a technician
If the code returns after descaling, call a technician.

E:30-00 E:31-00 Water protection system activated

What it means
The leak protection (water protection system) has been triggered.
Likely cause
Water has reached a place it should not — a leak inside the machine.

E:34-00 Water keeps running in

What it means
Water is running into the dishwasher continuously.
Likely cause
The machine cannot stop the water supply.

E:32-00 Water supply problem

What it means
Not enough water is coming in; the water-supply light may come on instead of, or as well as, the code.
Likely cause
A kinked supply hose, a closed or furred-up tap, or blocked filters in the water connection of the supply or AquaStop hose.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure the tap is fully on; Bosch says at least 10 litres a minute must flow with it open.
  • Lay the supply hose without kinks.
  • Clean the filter in the water connection: turn off the tap, unscrew the connection, take out the filter, clean it, put it back, screw the connection on and check it for leaks before switching on again.
When to call a technician
If the tap, hose and filter are fine and the code stays, call a technician.

E:92-40 Filters dirty or blocked

What it means
The filters in the bottom of the dishwasher are soiled or blocked.
Likely cause
Food debris in the filter system.
What you can safely check

If clean filters do not clear it, call a technician.

E:61-03 Water is not draining (hose or siphon)

What it means
Water is not pumped away.
Likely cause
A blocked or kinked waste-water hose, a sink siphon connection that is still sealed (new installation), or a loose cover on the waste-water pump.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Lay the waste-water hose without kinks and clear any residue.
  • Check the connection to the sink siphon and open it if it is still sealed.
  • Make sure the waste-water pump cover clicks into place.

E:61-02 Waste-water pump blocked

What it means
The waste-water (drain) pump is blocked.
Likely cause
Debris in the drain pump, or its cover is loose.

E:90-01 Mains voltage too low

What it means
The supply voltage reaching the dishwasher is too low. Bosch says this is not a fault on the appliance.

Any other code in the E:01-00 to E:90-10 format is, in Bosch's manual, a technical fault: switch the dishwasher off, unplug it (or switch off the fuse) for at least 2 minutes, switch on again, and if the code returns, turn off the water tap, unplug and give the code to Bosch customer service.
