LG tumble dryer error codes

9 codes that LG publishes for its tumble dryers, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Switch off and unplug before checking. Anything electrical, anything to do with gas, and any water leak at the mains: call a technician. Codes that need one are marked Technician.

Read this first

LG dryers show short letter codes, often in mixed case (tE1, nE, CL). LG UK’s help library has one list for all its dryers and says its content may differ from your model. Some codes are not faults: Add Water and CL are messages you clear yourself. Every code below is on that LG UK page.

tE1 Temperature sensor (thermistor) fault

What it means
The dryer found a problem with its temperature sensor.
Likely cause
The thermistor or its reading.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Unplug the dryer or switch off its circuit breaker. With the power off, hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds, then restore the power and run another cycle.
When to call a technician
If tE1 comes back after that reset, book a technician to repair the dryer.

tE2 Temperature sensor, cold conditions

What it means
A temperature-sensor problem, normally in cold conditions; it can appear in steam programmes because the duct cools too quickly.
Likely cause
A cold room or duct, or restricted airflow from lint.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Clean the lint filter between every load; wash it with warm water and a soft brush and let it dry before refitting.
  • On a vented dryer, check the outside vent: its flaps should open fully and not be jammed with lint; remove any lint you can see.
When to call a technician
If tE2 comes back after that, book a technician to repair the dryer.

tE4 Temperature out of range

What it means
A thermistor problem has put the temperature inside the dryer out of range.
Likely cause
A fault in the temperature sensing.
What you can safely check

Nothing for the owner to check: this one is for a technician.

When to call a technician
Technician LG says this code needs a repair service: book a technician.

E05 E5 Steam water supply

What it means
A problem with the water supply for the steam cycle (steam dryers with a tap connection).
Likely cause
A frozen, clogged or closed tap, a kinked inlet hose, or a dirty inlet filter.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the tap is fully open and not frozen or clogged.
  • Check the inlet hose lets the water flow.
  • Clean the inlet filter.
When to call a technician
If E05 comes back after that, book a technician to repair the dryer.

Add Water Fill the steam feeder

What it means
The steam feeder drawer needs water before a steam cycle.
Likely cause
The drawer is empty or not fully closed.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Press PAUSE, fill the steam feeder with tap water up to the MAX line (not distilled water) and close the drawer fully.
  • Switch the dryer off and on, select the steam cycle and press START/PAUSE.
When to call a technician
No technician is needed for this message on its own.

nE nF Wi-Fi module problem

What it means
nE: the control panel and the Wi-Fi module are not communicating. nF: a problem with the Wi-Fi module.
Likely cause
A fault in the Wi-Fi module or its connection.
What you can safely check

Nothing for the owner to check: this one is for a technician.

When to call a technician
Technician LG says these codes need a repair service: book a technician.

CL Child lock on

What it means
Not a fault: the child lock is on and the machine will not start.
Likely cause
The child lock was switched on; it stays on after the cycle ends, even when the dryer is switched off.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • With the dryer switched on, hold the Child Lock button (it may be marked with a lock) for 3–5 seconds to turn it off.
When to call a technician
No technician is needed for this message on its own.

A code that is not listed here

LG’s list also has a gAS code for gas-heated dryers (the gas supply is off or the line is kinked), and a TE3 heading whose text describes a washing machine’s FE overfill code instead, so TE3 is not listed here. If your code is not on this page, check your model’s own manual.
