Samsung tumble dryer error codes

27 codes that Samsung publishes for its tumble dryers, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Switch off and unplug before checking. Anything electrical, anything to do with gas, and any water leak at the mains: call a technician. Codes that need one are marked Technician.

Read this first

Samsung calls these information codes, and says most of them are not a mechanical problem. Most come in pairs, such as dC and dE or 5C and 5E, which Samsung lists together as one fault. Samsung’s first step for any code is to unplug the dryer and wait at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in, which lets the control board reset. Every code below is on Samsung UK’s own support page, updated 18 July 2025.

dC dE Door open

What it means
The dryer was started, or is running, with the door open.
Likely cause
The door is not shut, laundry is caught in it, or the child lock is on and the door was opened.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Close the door and start again.
  • Make sure no laundry is caught in the door.
  • Check whether the child lock is on: with it on, opening the door can bring up this code even when the dryer is not running.
When to call a technician

NC NC1 Check the lint filter

What it means
A problem with the lint (fluff) filter.
Likely cause
The lint filter assembly is missing, not seated, or clogged.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the lint filter assembly: take it out, clean it and refit it properly.
When to call a technician

NC2 Check the heat-exchanger cover

What it means
A problem with the inner cover of the heat exchanger.
Likely cause
The internal heat-exchanger cover is not fitted or not closed properly.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the internal heat-exchanger cover assembly is in place and closed.
When to call a technician

5C 5E Check drainage

What it means
The condensed water is not draining away.
Likely cause
A bent or damaged drain hose, a frozen drain hose, a full water tank, or a fault in the drain pump.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Empty the water tank, switch the dryer on and start again.
  • Make sure the drain hose is not bent or damaged.
  • If the hose is frozen, wrap it in a towel soaked in warm water for about ten minutes to thaw it.
When to call a technician

tC tE Air temperature sensor

What it means
A problem with the air temperature sensor.
Likely cause
Often restricted airflow: a clogged lint filter or heat exchanger, or a restricted vent.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Clean the lint filter and the heat exchanger.
  • Check the lint screen is not clogged.
  • Check the vent system is not restricted.
When to call a technician
If the code stays after cleaning, contact a Samsung service centre to book a technician.

tC5 tE5 Compressor temperature sensor

What it means
A problem with the compressor temperature sensor (heat-pump dryers).
Likely cause
Samsung names the sensor only; its checks point to restricted airflow through a clogged lint screen or vent.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Wait two to three minutes, turn the power back on and start again.
  • Check the lint screen is not clogged.
  • Check the vent system is not restricted.

FIL + tEr Heat exchanger needs cleaning

The heat exchanger needs to be cleaned.
Likely cause
Fluff has built up on the heat exchanger.
What you can safely check

3C 3E Motor check

What it means
The inverter motor needs to be checked.
Likely cause
The drum motor did not run as expected.

What it means
An electronic control problem: the control parts are not communicating.

A fault in the electronics.

AC6 AE6 Main and inverter boards not communicating

What it means
The main board and the inverter board are not communicating.
Likely cause
A fault between the two control boards.

HC HE Overheating

What it means
The compressor is overheating, or the heating needs checking.
Likely cause
Restricted airflow from a full lint filter, a tripped circuit, or a wiring fault at the heating element.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the circuit breakers in your consumer unit and reset any that have tripped.
  • Clean the lint filter.

What it means
The dryer has detected an invalid mains frequency.
Likely cause
A problem with the power supply reaching the dryer.

9C1 9E1 9C2 9E2 Power supply to the electronics

What it means
The electronic control needs to be checked: the power it receives is not right.
Likely cause
The power cord is not fully plugged in, or the supply is not reaching the dryer properly.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the power cord is plugged in fully.
  • Check the power is supplied properly (the socket works).

dF Door switch fault

What it means
The door switch is reading wrongly.
Likely cause
Loose or damaged wiring in the door or door-lock switch circuit, or a failed switch.
What you can safely check

Nothing for the owner to check: this one is for a technician.

When to call a technician
Technician Samsung’s fix is to check the wiring of the door-lock switch circuit and possibly replace the whole door lock: that is inside the machine, so contact a Samsung service centre to book a technician.
