Samsung air conditioner error codes

14 codes that Samsung publishes for its air conditioners, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call an installer. Tap your code:

Air conditioner: do only the checks the maker gives the owner for that code — clean the air filter, clear the air path, switch the power off and on at the plug or circuit breaker. Keep the covers on: refrigerant, wiring and circuit boards are not owner work. Anything else is for the installer or the maker’s service engineer: in the UK and EU only an F-gas certified technician may open the refrigerant circuit. Codes that need one are marked Installer.

Read this first

Samsung split air conditioners show two kinds of code on the indoor unit. Letters such as CF, CI and dF are messages, not faults: Samsung says most of them are not a product defect. Fault codes blink as two alternating parts — C1 then 21, on older models E1 then 21 — which together make C121 (or E121); the first letter depends on the model year. This page lists both kinds from Samsung’s own support pages for owners. Models differ: your model’s manual is the authority.

CF Clean the filter

What it means
A filter-cleaning reminder, not a fault.
Likely cause
The unit’s timer says the inner air filters are due for cleaning; a dusty filter cuts the airflow and can cause temperature problems and noise.
What you can safely check

Air conditioner: do only the checks the maker gives the owner for that code — clean the air filter, clear the air path, switch the power off and on at the plug or circuit breaker. Keep the covers on: refrigerant, wiring and circuit boards are not owner work.

  • Clean or replace the indoor unit’s inner filters, following your model’s user manual. Samsung recommends cleaning them every 2 weeks.
  • Then clear the reminder with the remote control, as your manual shows.

dF Defrosting

What it means
The automatic defrost is running during heating — normal, not a fault.
Likely cause
When it is cold and humid outside, frost builds up on the outdoor unit and cuts its heating output; the unit melts it off.
What you can safely check

Air conditioner: do only the checks the maker gives the owner for that code — clean the air filter, clear the air path, switch the power off and on at the plug or circuit breaker. Keep the covers on: refrigerant, wiring and circuit boards are not owner work.

  • Nothing to fix: wait. Samsung says defrost runs for 5 to 12 minutes; the indoor fan stops so it does not blow cold air, and the outdoor unit may give off steam.

CI Auto clean running

What it means
The Auto clean function is on — a function, not a fault.
Likely cause
Auto clean runs after the unit is switched off, against odours from the indoor unit; Samsung says it starts as soon as the air conditioner is turned off.
What you can safely check

Air conditioner: do only the checks the maker gives the owner for that code — clean the air filter, clear the air path, switch the power off and on at the plug or circuit breaker. Keep the covers on: refrigerant, wiring and circuit boards are not owner work.

  • If you do not want it, turn Auto clean off with the remote control, as your model’s manual shows.

C121 E121 Room temperature sensor fault

What it means
The room temperature sensor is defective or shorted. The display alternates C1 (or E1) and 21.
Likely cause
A failed room temperature sensor.
What you can safely check

C122 E122 Heat exchanger sensor fault

What it means
The indoor heat-exchanger temperature sensor is defective. The display alternates C1 (or E1) and 22.
Likely cause
A failed heat-exchanger temperature sensor.
What you can safely check

C154 E154 Indoor fan not turning

What it means
The indoor fan is not rotating. The display alternates C1 (or E1) and 54.
Likely cause
The fan motor or its capacitor (Samsung’s older page) is defective.

C163 E163 Memory (EEPROM) data error

What it means
The data in the main control board’s memory chip (EEPROM) is wrong or has been deleted. The display alternates C1 (or E1) and 63.
Likely cause
A control-board memory fault.

The indoor heat-exchanger sensor has a short circuit or an open circuit.
Likely cause
The sensor may have come loose from its place or failed; Samsung says it may need replacing.

For a code not listed here, Samsung’s advice is to write the code down and contact a Samsung service centre or qualified service provider with it; if an error code keeps appearing, it asks owners to contact the nearest service centre rather than keep resetting.
