Toshiba air conditioner error codes
12 codes that Toshiba publishes for its air conditioners, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call an installer. Tap your code:
Air conditioner: do only the checks the maker gives the owner for that code — clean the air filter, clear the air path, switch the power off and on at the plug or circuit breaker. Keep the covers on: refrigerant, wiring and circuit boards are not owner work. Anything else is for the installer or the maker’s service engineer: in the UK and EU only an F-gas certified technician may open the refrigerant circuit. Codes that need one are marked Installer.

Toshiba air conditioners with a wired remote show a three-character check code — a letter and two digits, such as E04 or F10 — together with the number of the indoor unit that has the problem; with a wireless remote, the Operation, Timer and Ready lamps on the receiver flash in a pattern instead. The codes below come from the installation manual of Toshiba’s RAV digital-inverter high-wall unit (RAV-HM1101KRTP-E), written for the installer, so none of them comes with an owner check: the manual lists the parts to check, all inside the units. Models differ: your model’s manual is the authority.
E04 Indoor–outdoor communication error
- What it means
- Serial communication between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit has failed.
- Likely cause
- Toshiba’s parts to check: the indoor–outdoor connecting wires, the indoor circuit board and the outdoor circuit board. The unit resets by itself once communication returns.

E01 No header remote controller
- What it means
- The remote controller cannot receive a signal from the indoor unit, or no remote is set as the header (main) remote.
- Likely cause
- A remote controller setting error, including a pair of remotes with neither set as header.
- What you can safely check

E03 Indoor unit not hearing the remote controller
- What it means
- The indoor unit is receiving no data from the remote controller or network adapter.
- Likely cause
- The remote controller, the network adapter or the indoor circuit board.

E08 Duplicated indoor unit addresses
- What it means
- Two indoor units have the same address.
- Likely cause
- An indoor address setting error, usually after installation or a change to the system.
- What you can safely check

F01 F02 Indoor heat exchanger sensor error
- What it means
- An indoor heat-exchanger temperature sensor is open- or short-circuited: F01 the TCJ sensor, F02 the TC sensor.
- Likely cause
- The sensor or the indoor circuit board.

- What it means
- The indoor room temperature sensor (TA) is open- or short-circuited.
- Likely cause
- The sensor or the indoor circuit board.

- What it means
- The outdoor unit’s discharge temperature sensor (TD) is open- or short-circuited. The whole system stops.
- Likely cause
- The sensor or the outdoor circuit board.

- The outdoor unit detected a compressor breakdown: minimum frequency was reached while limiting current, or a short-circuit current was detected after start. The whole system stops.

- The outdoor unit detected that the compressor is locked. The whole system stops.

- The compressor circuit.

P01 Indoor fan error
- What it means
- An indoor fan error was detected — the fan motor’s thermal relay has operated. The whole system stops.
- Likely cause
- The indoor fan motor or the indoor circuit board.

L31 Phase sequence error
- What it means
- The three-phase power supply is connected in the wrong phase order. The unit keeps running with the thermostat off.
- Likely cause
- The power supply phase sequence or the outdoor circuit board.
- What you can safely check
