AEG tumble dryer error codes

8 codes that AEG publishes for its tumble dryers, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Switch off and unplug before checking. Anything electrical, anything to do with gas, and any water leak at the mains: call a technician. Codes that need one are marked Technician.

Read this first

AEG tumble dryers show a code on the display, such as E40 or E50. AEG UK has one support article per code; the ones below apply to vented, condenser and heat-pump dryers unless the entry says otherwise. For several of them AEG’s first step is a reset: unplug the dryer, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, switch on and choose a programme. Electrolux and Zanussi dryers come from the same group, but the source here is AEG’s: check your own manual.

E40 Door not closed properly

What it means
The door is not properly closed, and the dryer will not start until it is.
Likely cause
Laundry caught between the door and its seal, a dirty or worn seal, a dirty door lock, an overloaded drum or, less often, a faulty lock or door sensor.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure no laundry is caught between the door and the seal, then close the door until it clicks.
  • Clean the door seal with a soft damp cloth and mild detergent.
  • Take some laundry out if the drum is over its maximum load.
  • Reset: unplug for 30 seconds, plug in, switch on and choose a programme.
When to call a technician
A damaged door lock or door sensor needs a service technician.

E50 Motor or software problem

What it means
A problem with the motor or the software.
Likely cause
A fault in the drive motor or the control software.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Reset: unplug for 30 seconds (or use the safety switch), plug in, switch on and choose a programme.
When to call a technician
Technician If the reset does not clear it, request a service technician and quote the code.

E60 Heating problem

What it means
A problem with the heat source: the dryer does not heat up and the laundry stays wet.
Likely cause
Poor ventilation around the dryer, dirty filters, or a broken heat source.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure the dryer is not built into an enclosed cabinet without ventilation.
  • Make sure the room is big enough (AEG says more than 10–12 m²) and ventilated, for example with a window or door open while drying.
  • Clean the fluff filter, the condenser and the door seal.
  • Run a timed drying programme and feel whether the inside is warm after about 30 minutes.
When to call a technician
If the inside is still cold after 30 minutes, the heat source may be broken: book a repair by a technician.

EH0 EH1 EH2 Power supply problem

EH0 may look like EHO on the display. Condenser and heat-pump dryers.

What it means
A problem with the electricity supply to the dryer.
Likely cause
Voltage too low or too high, or an unstable supply.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Plug a different appliance into the same socket to see whether it works.
  • Do not run the dryer from an extension cable.
  • Reset: unplug for 30 seconds, plug in, switch on and choose a programme.
When to call a technician
Technician Electrical: if the socket or house wiring is at fault, call an electrician; if the code stays on a good socket, book a repair by a technician.

CD Door latch problem

What it means
A problem with the door latch.
Likely cause
The door is not closed properly, or the latch is faulty.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Close the door properly.
When to call a technician
Technician If the door is closed and the code stays, contact an authorised service centre for a technician.

Err Change not allowed

What it means
Not a fault: you tried to change the programme or a setting after the cycle started, or chose an option the programme cannot use.
Likely cause
A button pressed mid-cycle, or an option that does not go with the selected programme.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Switch the dryer off and on, then choose the programme and options again.
  • Make sure the door is fully closed before starting.
When to call a technician
No technician is needed for this message on its own.

A code that is not listed here

AEG’s power-supply article says that any code starting with EH (EH0, EH1, EH2 …) points to the mains supply. If you call AEG about any code, note it down: AEG says quoting it helps the engineer.
