AEG washing machine error codes

21 codes that AEG publishes for its washing machines, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Switch off and unplug before checking. Anything electrical, anything to do with gas, and any water leak at the mains: call a technician. Codes that need one are marked Technician.

Read this first

AEG washing machines show codes that start with E (E10, E20 …); machines without a display beep or flash the number of times given by the code's first digit (E10 = 1 beep, E40 = 4). Every code below is on AEG UK's own support site. Electrolux and Zanussi washing machines come from the same group and often use the same codes, but the source here is AEG's: check your own manual.

E10 E11 Water supply problem

Also shown as C1, or as 1 beep / 1 flash.

What it means
The machine is not filling, is filling too slowly, or has a drainage problem that upsets the fill.
Likely cause
A closed tap or low pressure, blocked inlet filters, kinked hoses, or a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure the tap is fully open. AEG's test: about 10 litres should run from the tap in a minute.
  • Turn off the water, take off the inlet hose and clean the small filter at the hose connection and the one in the machine's inlet valve.
  • Straighten any kinks in the inlet and drain hoses behind the machine.
  • The drain hose should go no more than 10 cm into the standpipe, with the drain 60–100 cm high.
  • Clean the pump filter.
When to call a technician
If these are fine and the code stays, book a technician.

E20 E21 E22 E23 E24 Not draining

Also shown as C2, or as 2 beeps / 2 flashes.

What it means
The machine cannot pump the water out; water may stay in the drum and the spin may not run.
Likely cause
Most often a blocked drain filter, then a blocked sink trap or drain, a kinked hose or a drain at the wrong height.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Clean the pump and fluff filter, turning the pump blade with a pencil if you can see it.
  • Drain hose: no more than 10 cm into the drain, with the drain 60–100 cm above the base of the machine; no kinks or twists.
  • Check the sink trap and household drain are not blocked (try a wash with the hose in a bowl or sink).
  • If the hose has been extended, check the joint for a blockage.
When to call a technician
If it still does not drain, book a technician.

E30 Water-pressure sensor problem or water in the base

Also shown as C3, or as 3 beeps / 3 flashes.

What it means
AEG's overview lists E30 as a water-pressure (level) sensor problem; its E30 article treats the machine as leaking into its base.
Likely cause
A leak at the supply hose, laundry caught in the door seal, or a damaged door seal — or a sensor fault.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the supply-hose connections at the tap and at the machine for leaks.
  • Check no clothing is caught between the door seal and the glass, and that the seal is undamaged.
  • Clean the filters in the inlet hose and water valve.
When to call a technician
Technician Water leak: if the code returns, call a technician.

E40 E41 Door not closed

Also shown as 4 beeps / 4 flashes.

What it means
The door or lid is not properly closed or not detected, so the machine will not start.
Likely cause
The door is not pushed shut, laundry is caught in the seal, the drum is overloaded or the mechanical child lock is engaged.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Push the door firmly until it clicks.
  • Remove laundry caught between the seal and the glass; take out excess laundry.
  • If the machine has a mechanical child lock, turn it off with a coin as the manual shows.
When to call a technician
If it persists, the door lock may be faulty: book a technician.

E50 Motor failure

Also shown as C9 or F9.

What it means
A motor failure has occurred.
Likely cause
A motor or motor-control fault.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Switch off at the wall socket or breaker, wait about 1 minute, switch on again.
When to call a technician
Technician Electrical: if the code returns, call a technician. AEG advises not using the machine until it is fixed.

E60 E61 E62 E69 Heating problem

What it means
Any code starting E6 generally means a heating fault.
Likely cause
A heating fault.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Switch off at the wall socket or breaker, wait about 1 minute, switch on again.
When to call a technician
Technician Electrical: if the code returns, call a technician. AEG advises not using the machine until it is fixed.

EH0 EH1 EH2 EH3 Power supply problem

EH0 may look like EHO on the display.

What it means
A problem with the electricity supply to the machine.
Likely cause
The socket or house wiring.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Plug a different appliance into the same socket to see whether it works.
  • Do not run the machine from an extension cable.
  • Unplug for 30–60 seconds, plug in again and select a programme.
When to call a technician
Technician Electrical: if the socket or wiring is at fault, call an electrician; if the code stays on a good socket, call a technician.

EF0 EF3 Leak, too much foam or unbalanced load

EF0 may look like EFO; also shown as 15 beeps / 15 flashes. EF3 means a water leak was detected.

What it means
A warning most often caused by water leakage, over-foaming or an unbalanced load.
Likely cause
Too much detergent, a dirty dispenser drawer, laundry caught in the door seal, or a leak.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Use less detergent; if there is foam, switch off and leave the machine a few hours for it to settle.
  • Clean the dispenser drawer.
  • Check no clothing is caught between the door seal and the glass.
  • Clean the filters in the inlet hose and water valve.
When to call a technician
Technician Water leak: if the code returns, have the machine inspected by a technician.
