Hoover washing machine error codes

7 codes that Hoover publishes for its washing machines, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Switch off and unplug before checking. Anything electrical, anything to do with gas, and any water leak at the mains: call a technician. Codes that need one are marked Technician.

Read this first

Hoover washing machines with a display show an E and a number (E2, E3 …); models without a display flash every light that number of times, pause 5 seconds and repeat. Hoover’s manual cited here (the H-Link HL 2D range) explains E2, E3, E4 and E7; Hoover UK’s advice centre adds E02, E08 and E20 for the washing machines and washer-dryers it names, and says E20 applies only on some models. Check your manual — models differ. Candy belongs to the same group (Haier owns Hoover and Candy), but every source here is Hoover’s, and Haier-branded machines are not covered by them.

E2 E02 Cannot take in water

Without a display: 2 flashes of the lights.

What it means
The machine cannot fill: the water pressure is very low or no water is flowing in.
Likely cause
A closed or broken supply tap, a bent, kinked or trapped inlet hose, a blocked filter where the hose meets the machine, or a drain hose at the wrong height.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure the supply tap is open. Do not force a stiff tap: Hoover warns the valve may be seized, and a plumber should fix it.
  • Make sure the inlet hose is not bent, kinked or trapped behind the machine.
  • Close the tap, unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the machine and check its anti-sand filter is clean.
  • To test the supply: with the tap off, put the hose end in a bucket and turn the tap on. No water means a plumber’s job, not the machine’s.
  • Check the drain hose is at the height the installation section of the manual gives.
When to call a technician
If water flows and the code stays, book a Hoover service technician. A seized or broken tap is for a plumber.

E3 Not draining

Without a display: 3 flashes of the lights.

What it means
The washing machine does not pump the water out.
Likely cause
A clogged filter, a bent, kinked or trapped drain hose, or a blocked household drain.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Clean the drain filter.
  • Make sure the drain hose is not bent, kinked or trapped.
  • Check the household drain is not blocked: try draining the water into the sink.
When to call a technician
If it still does not drain, book a Hoover service technician.

E4 Too much foam or water

Without a display: 4 flashes of the lights.

What it means
There is too much foam and/or water in the machine.
Likely cause
Too much detergent, or a detergent not made for washing machines.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Use the right amount of detergent, and only detergent made for washing machines.
When to call a technician
If E4 comes back with the right detergent, book a Hoover service technician.

E7 Door problem

Without a display: 7 flashes of the lights.

What it means
The door is not closed properly or will not release.
Likely cause
A door not fully shut, or laundry stopping it closing.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure the door is closed properly and no laundry is stopping it closing fully.
  • If the door is locked: switch off, unplug the machine, wait 2–3 minutes and open it again.
When to call a technician
If E7 stays, book a Hoover service technician.

E08 Drum overloaded

What it means
Too many clothes in the drum for the machine.
Likely cause
An overloaded drum.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Take some garments out to make the load smaller, and start again.
When to call a technician
If E08 persists, call Hoover’s advisors, who can send a technician.

E20 Drain pump blocked (some models)

What it means
On some models, an obstruction or blockage in the drain pump.
Likely cause
Something caught in the drain pump.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the drain pump for a blockage and clear it; Hoover’s E20 page has a video of how.
When to call a technician
If E20 is still there after clearing the pump, ring Hoover’s contact centre for a technician.

A code that is not listed here

Hoover’s manual says of any other code: switch off and unplug the machine, wait a minute, switch on and restart a programme; if the error comes back, contact an authorised Hoover service centre. On One Touch models, Hoover’s Wizard app (Android with NFC) can read the fault when you hold the phone against the One Touch logo.
