Frigidaire washing machine error codes

7 codes that Frigidaire publishes for its washing machines, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a technician. Tap your code:

Switch off and unplug before checking. Anything electrical, anything to do with gas, and any water leak at the mains: call a technician. Codes that need one are marked Technician.

This page covers US (North American) models: Frigidaire washers sold in the United States and Canada. Frigidaire writes one support article per code. Its top-loading washers use E1 to E5 — and on some models just the number, 1 to 5 — plus CL for the control lock; F2 is an oversudsing code on its washers. Several of these are installation problems, and Frigidaire says that if the washer was installed or moved in the last 30 days, the installer should put it right before you book service. E1 Slow fill

Some models show just 1.

What it means
Water is not coming into the washer, or is filling too slowly.
Likely cause
An open lid, taps not fully open, low water pressure, kinked inlet hoses, or clogged filter screens in the hoses.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Make sure the lid is closed.
  • Open the hot and cold taps fully and check the water pressure.
  • Straighten kinked inlet hoses.
  • Disconnect the hoses and clean the filter screens in them.
  • Look for water leaking from the tub.
When to call a technician
If none of that helps, book a technician.

E2 Slow drain

Some models show just 2.

What it means
Water is draining too slowly, or not at all.
Likely cause
A kinked or clogged drain hose, a standpipe at the wrong height, a tripped breaker — or an open lid: the washer will not spin with the lid open.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Check the fuse or circuit breaker.
  • Check the standpipe height.
  • Close the lid and press Start/Pause.
  • Straighten or unclog the drain hose.
  • Installed or moved in the last 30 days? Frigidaire says to go back to the installer first.
When to call a technician
If it is more than 30 days since installation and it still does not drain, book a technician.

E3 Lid open or lid lock failed

Some models show just 3.

What it means
The lid is open, or the lid lock has failed.
Likely cause
A lid not fully shut, a washer that is not level, or a failed lid lock or circuit board.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Close the lid completely.
  • Check the washer is level.
  • Installed or moved in the last 30 days? Frigidaire says to go back to the installer first.
When to call a technician
If the lid does not lock after you start a cycle, Frigidaire says the lid lock or circuit board may have failed: book a technician.

E4 Out of balance

Some models show just 4.

What it means
The load went out of balance during the spin. The washer tries to fix it itself three times before it stops.
Likely cause
Laundry piled on one side, a washer not resting firmly on the floor, or foam shipping support left in after installation.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Spread the laundry evenly around the basket.
  • Adjust the levelling legs so the washer rests firmly on the floor.
  • On a new washer, check the foam shipping support was removed (see the installation instructions).
  • Installed or moved in the last 30 days? Frigidaire says to go back to the installer first.
When to call a technician
If an even load on a level washer still shows E4, book a technician.

E5 Washer not level

Some models show just 5.

What it means
The washer is not level.
Likely cause
Levelling legs not adjusted, or the washer leaning back.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Adjust the levelling legs until the washer is level and not leaning back (your use and care manual shows how).
When to call a technician
No technician is needed if levelling clears it; if not, book a technician.

CL Lid open with control lock on

What it means
The lid has been open for more than 20 seconds while the control lock is on.
Likely cause
The control lock was left on.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Switch the washer off.
  • Turn off the control lock (your use and care manual shows how).
When to call a technician
No technician is needed: this is the lock, not a fault.

F2 Too many suds

What it means
There is too much detergent, or the wrong kind, and suds may leak or overflow.
Likely cause
Non-HE detergent, or too much of it.
What you can safely check

Switch off and unplug before checking.

  • Use high-efficiency (HE) detergent, and less of it.
  • Run an empty Quick Wash to clean the washer out.
When to call a technician
No technician is needed for suds alone; if F2 comes back with the right detergent, book a technician.
