LG fridge freezer error codes
37 codes that LG publishes for its fridge freezers, each with what it means, the likely cause, what you can safely check and when to call a service engineer. Tap your code:
Fridge or freezer: do only the checks the maker gives for that code, and unplug it only where the maker says to — Samsung asks owners not to unplug or press buttons to clear a code, so its engineer can still read the fault. Do not take off panels or touch sensors, wiring or the cooling circuit: anything past the maker’s own checks is for the maker’s service engineer. Codes that need one are marked Engineer.
Read this first
LG fridge-freezers show a fault as Er (or E) followed by letters — Er FF, Er rF, Er dH — on the temperature display. LG’s UK help library loads its articles only in a browser, so the codes here come from LG’s own help library for the Middle East (lg.com/levant_en and lg.com/ae), whose articles say they were written for all models and that images or content may differ on yours: models differ, so check your manual too. For almost every code LG’s first step is a reset — unplug, or switch off the fridge’s own circuit breaker, for about 5 minutes — and if the same code comes back, an LG service technician.
Er FF E FF Freezer fan error
- What it means
- The freezer fan motor is not working normally.
- Likely cause
- A fault in the fan motor, or the fan locked by ice (frost) around it.
- What you can safely check
Fridge or freezer: do only the checks the maker gives for that code, and unplug it only where the maker says to — Samsung asks owners not to unplug or press buttons to clear a code, so its engineer can still read the fault.
- Reset: unplug the fridge, or trip its own circuit breaker, and use it again after about 5 minutes.
- If ice is the cause: unplug it and leave the freezer and fridge doors wide open until the frost round the fan has melted — LG allows about one day in summer and three days in winter.
- When to call a service engineer
- If you are worried about the food inside, LG recommends requesting a service visit rather than defrosting. If the same code comes back, it needs an LG service technician.

Er rF E rF Fridge fan error
- What it means
- The fan in the fridge (refrigerator) compartment is not working normally.
- Likely cause
- A fault in the fridge fan motor.
- What you can safely check

- Reset: unplug the fridge, or trip its own circuit breaker, and use it again after about 5 minutes.

F dH r dH Er dH Defrost failure
- What it means
- The freezer (F dH) or the fridge (r dH) did not get back to its normal temperature within a set time after defrosting started. LG’s all-model list writes it Er dH.
- Likely cause
- Ice build-up, a drain hole blocked by ice so the melt water cannot reach the drain tray, a disconnected temperature fuse or heater, or a fault in the main circuit board.
- What you can safely check
Fridge or freezer: do only the checks the maker gives for that code, and unplug it only where the maker says to — Samsung asks owners not to unplug or press buttons to clear a code, so its engineer can still read the fault.
- If the drain hole is blocked by ice: move the food to a spare fridge if you have one, unplug the fridge, and leave the doors wide open until the ice melts — about a day in summer, three days in winter. The melt water should then run to the drain tray again.
- When to call a service engineer
- If you are worried about the food, or the same code comes back, LG recommends a service technician.

Er d1 Er d2 Er d Er H1 Er H2 Ice on the cooling plate
- What it means
- LG groups these with Er dH: the fridge may work normally again once the ice on the cooling plate is removed, but the code may return over time.
- Likely cause
- Ice on the cooling plate.
- What you can safely check
Fridge or freezer: do only the checks the maker gives for that code, and unplug it only where the maker says to — Samsung asks owners not to unplug or press buttons to clear a code, so its engineer can still read the fault.
- To clear it for now: take out all the food, lay dry towels on the floor in front of the doors, unplug the fridge and leave the doors open for at least 12 hours.
- When to call a service engineer
- LG warns that frequent errors reduce cooling and affect food quality, and recommends contacting LG Customer Support; if the code persists, LG says to contact LG Support for service.

Er CH Er CL E CH E CL Cooling problem (inspection code)
- What it means
- LG’s inspection code for a fridge temperature defect: weak cooling has been detected. On a new installation the fridge checks this 24 hours after it is switched on.
- Likely cause
- If it appears after installing or moving a fridge: possibly a fault in the cooling cycle, such as a refrigerant leak or a compressor or valve failure. If it appears during use: often temporary — a door left open for a long time, an unstable power supply or another electrical cause.
- What you can safely check

- If it appeared during normal use: switch the fridge off, or trip its circuit breaker, and switch it back on about 5 minutes later.
- When to call a service engineer
- After a new installation or a move, LG recommends an LG service technician straight away. During use, call one if the code comes back after the reset.

- What it means
- The fridge has detected a problem with an internal part: a faulty component, a control circuit or a disconnected wire. LG’s page gives these codes no separate meanings.
- Likely cause
- A faulty component, control circuit or wire.
- What you can safely check
Fridge or freezer: do only the checks the maker gives for that code, and unplug it only where the maker says to — Samsung asks owners not to unplug or press buttons to clear a code, so its engineer can still read the fault.
- Reset: unplug the fridge, wait about 5 minutes, plug it back in and see whether the code has cleared.
- When to call a service engineer
- If the code stays or comes back, stop using the fridge and contact LG for service. LG warns not to take it apart or replace internal parts yourself: it can cause fire, electric shock, serious injury or death.

LG’s help library says that any code which comes back after a reset needs an LG service technician, and warns never to take the fridge apart or replace parts yourself. If your code is not listed here, check your model’s manual.
