Fan with bottom heat (pizza setting)

The bottom element heats and the fan circulates hot air, so the base gets concentrated heat from below while moving air cooks the top.

What it is for

Pizza with a crisp base that does not burn the topping, and pastry dishes where the filling should stay moist (Neff); pastries and pizzas (Hotpoint); pizza, bread or cake (Samsung).

Makes differ, check your oven’s manual: the same drawing can mean different things on different brands, and only your model’s manual says exactly which elements run and how hot.

What it looks like
A fan with a single straight line below it and nothing above. Siemens and Samsung put the fan in a circle; Neff draws a bare fan.
Names makers use
Pizza setting (Siemens); Pizza symbol or fan with bottom heat (Neff); Bottom Heat + Convection (Samsung); Fan with bottom heat (Hotpoint)

Where makes differ

Other ovens draw their pizza mode as a pizza instead (Bosch, AEG, and Neff models with a dedicated pizza mode). Siemens shows this fan-and-bottom-line drawing for its Pizza setting but describes that setting as top and bottom heat with the bottom stronger — the same words it uses for Intensive heat — so on a Siemens oven check the manual for which elements run. Samsung also has a Top Heat + Convection mode, drawn with the line above the fan.

Often confused with

A dedicated pizza mode. Which elements it runs and how hot it goes are set by the maker, which is why the picture is used instead of a heating diagram.
