Pizza (a pizza or a slice)

A dedicated pizza mode. Which elements it runs and how hot it goes are set by the maker, which is why the picture is used instead of a heating diagram.

What it is for

Pizza first, then the other bases-first dishes the makers list: quiches, tarts and frozen food (Bosch), quiche, tart or pie (AEG), and pies, fish or cookies (Smeg). AEG says to use the bottom shelf level and preheat the baking tray while the oven heats.

Makes differ, check your oven’s manual: the same drawing can mean different things on different brands, and only your model’s manual says exactly which elements run and how hot.

What it looks like
A round pizza with one slice pulled out (Bosch), a single slice with toppings (AEG), or another picture of a pizza.
Names makers use
Pizza setting (Bosch); Pizza (AEG, Smeg); Pizza 310°C (Hotpoint)

Where makes differ

The numbers vary by maker: Hotpoint’s pizza mode reaches 310 °C, and Smeg says its pizza function cooks a pizza in about 5 minutes depending on the toppings. On many other ovens the pizza setting is drawn as a fan with a line under it.

Often confused with

The bottom element heats and the fan circulates hot air, so the base gets concentrated heat from below while moving air cooks the top.
