Smeg fridge-freezer symbols
The 7 symbols that Smeg’s own fridge-freezer manuals explain, with Smeg’s name for each, what it does on a Smeg, the manual’s own words and the document it comes from. The drawing is ours; tap a symbol for its full page.
The Smeg manual checked here is for the FD70EN4HX, a 70 cm freestanding fridge-freezer. Its panel shows eight symbols in a row (super freeze, the freezer temperature, super cool, the fridge temperature, alarm, child lock, holiday and economy) and has three buttons: freezer, cooler and MODE. The freezer and cooler buttons step through the temperatures and end on super freeze or super cool; MODE picks economy or holiday. Other Smeg models may have a different panel, so compare with your own manual.
Makes differ, check your fridge’s manual: the same drawing can mean different things on different brands, and only your model’s manual says exactly what a button does, what temperature it sets and when it switches itself off.
Super freeze / fast freeze (snowflakes)
Smeg calls it: Super freeze (symbol 1)
Press the freezer button past −24 °C to reach it. Switch it on 3 hours before a big load: the fridge beeps when it is ready, and the mode ends within 24 hours.
“For optimal appliance performance in maximum freezer capacity, activate SF mode 3 hours before you put fresh food into the freezer. At the end of this period, the fridge will sound an audible alarm notifying that it is ready. Super freeze mode will automatically cancel after 24 hours, depending on the environmental temperature or when the freezer sensor reaches a sufficiently low temperature.”

Super cool / fast cool (fridge)
Smeg calls it: Super cool (symbol 3)
The cooler button steps through +8, +6, +5, +4 and +2 °C, then super cool. While it runs, economy and holiday mode cannot be chosen.
“To cool and store a large quantity of food in the fridge compartment. • To quickly cool drinks. How Would It Be Used? Press cooler set button until super cool symbol will be seen on the screen. Buzzer will sound beep beep.”

Eco mode on a fridge-freezer (leaf or ECO)
Smeg calls it: Economy mode (symbol 8)
Both temperature displays show E instead of a number; Smeg does not say which temperatures it uses. Press MODE again to cancel it.
“During periods of less frequent use (door opening) or absence from home, such as a holiday, Eco program can provide optimum temperature whilst saving power. … Freezer and refrigerator temperature segments will show "E".”

Holiday / vacation mode (sun, beach or suitcase)
Smeg calls it: Holiday mode (symbol 7)
The fridge display shows -- while it is on; the manual does not give the temperature. Choosing super cool or super freeze ends it.
“Push "MODE" button until holiday symbol appears • If no button is pressed for 1 second. Mode will be set. Holiday symbol will blink 3 times. When mode is set, buzzer will sound beep beep. • Cooler temperature segment will show "--".”

Smeg calls it: Door open alarm
It beeps once the fridge door has been open for 2 minutes.
“If fridge door is opened more than 2 minutes, appliance sounds ‘beep beep’.”

No frost / auto defrost
Smeg calls it: New-generation cooling technology
Smeg does not use the word NoFrost here, but it describes the same fan system; it says static fridges, unlike this one, need regular defrosting.
“In fridges with new-generation cooling technology, a fan blows dry cold air evenly throughout the fridge and freezer compartments. The cold air cools your food evenly and uniformly, preventing humidity and ice build-up.”

Child lock or button lock (key or padlock)
Smeg calls it: Child lock (symbol 6)
Hold both buttons for 5 seconds to switch it on or off. A power cut or unplugging also switches it off.
“Child lock can be activated to prevent any accidental or unintentional changes being made to the appliance settings. Activating Child Lock Press on freezer and cooler buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds.”

Not in the Smeg manuals checked
The Smeg documents below do not show these symbols from this site, so they are left off this page: One star (*), Two stars (**), Three stars (***), Four stars (one large star and three small), No stars, Chill compartment, Sabbath mode, Showroom / demo mode, Temperature alarm, Ice maker off, Water filter change light, Temperature zones and the “OK” indicator and Humidity control on the vegetable drawer. That does not mean no Smeg fridge has one, only that the manuals read here do not. If yours shows a symbol not listed, find it by its shape.
