Mask fit and mask seal results on a CPAP machine

Most machines can check the mask for you: the machine blows air while you wear the mask and it reports whether the seal is good. Some also give a verdict on last night’s seal in the morning summary. What each maker’s result means.

Therapy settings: This page explains what a CPAP machine’s screen or light is telling you, in the maker’s words. It is not medical advice: ask your equipment provider or clinician about your therapy settings, and do not change your pressure or any prescribed setting because of anything here.

ResMed

  1. ResMed AirSense 10 A morning summary screen

Mask Seal (Sleep Report): “Good mask seal” or “Needs adjusting”

After you stop therapy the Sleep Report shows one of two icons for Mask Seal, which the guide labels “Good mask seal” and “Needs adjusting, see Mask Fit”. It says how well the mask sealed during the session.

    What ResMed says to do

    1. If it needs adjusting, run Mask Fit: in My Options highlight Run Mask Fit and press the dial. The machine starts blowing air.
    2. Adjust the mask, the mask cushion and the headgear until you get a Good result. Press the dial or Start/Stop to stop Mask Fit.
    3. If you cannot get a good seal, talk to your care provider.

  2. ResMed AirSense 11 Something the machine does

    Mask Fit (MORE menu)

A function that helps you assess and find possible air leaks around the mask. The Start Therapy/Standby light is white while it runs.

    What ResMed says to do

    1. For air leaking around the mask, ResMed says to make sure the mask is fitted correctly: see the mask user guide, run the Mask Fit function, or watch the Mask Fit video in the myAir app.

  3. ResMed AirMini Something the machine does

    Mask Fit (AirMini app)

On the AirMini, Mask Fit runs from the AirMini phone app, not the machine.

    What ResMed says to do

    1. If air leaks from around the mask or the mask is noisy, make sure the mask is fitted correctly (see its user guide) or run Mask Fit in the app.
    2. Make sure the AirMini system is correctly assembled.

Philips Respironics

  1. Philips Respironics DreamStation 2 A morning summary screen

Last Session Mask fit: “Good fit” or “Adjust fit”

A screen in the summary shown after therapy is turned off. “Good fit” means the leak found allows optimal performance of the device. “Adjust fit” means the leak may affect device performance; the machine still works and delivers therapy.

What Philips Respironics says to do

    1. If “Adjust fit” shows, adjust the mask to reduce the leak before starting therapy again.

React Health

  1. React Health Luna G3 An icon on the screen

Mask Fitting Test: “great” or “need to adjust”

An option in the patient menu that tests whether the mask is worn correctly. The screen shows the “great” icon if it passes, otherwise the “need to adjust” icon.

The manual gives no further step on this screen; its troubleshooting table points leaks from a wrong-size or badly positioned mask to your home care provider.
