BT Smart Hub 2 lights: what each colour means

10 light states of the BT Smart Hub 2, from BT’s own page What do the lights on my BT Hub or Complete Wi-Fi device mean?. It has one status light, plus a light in the WPS button. BT says a freshly plugged-in Smart Hub 2 usually takes about four minutes to sync.

  1. Blue

    Your hub is connected to your broadband OK.

    What BT says to do

    1. If you can’t get online, it might be your device: switch it off and on.

  2. Green

    Your hub is starting up.

    What BT says to do

    1. Wait at least three minutes for it to turn blue.
    2. If it stays green, turn the hub off and on again.
    3. If it still doesn’t turn blue, press the hub’s factory reset button with a paper clip; if that doesn’t fix it, contact BT.

  3. Flashing orange

    Your hub is connecting to broadband.

    What BT says to do

    1. Give it at least three minutes to connect; the light turns blue when the hub is ready.

  4. Orange

    Your hub is working but isn’t connected to the internet.

    What BT says to do

    1. Connect a device to the hub, open a new web browser window and follow the on-screen help wizard to get connected.

  5. Flashing purple

    Your hub is working but the broadband cable isn’t connected.

    What BT says to do

    1. Full Fibre: check the Ethernet cable (red ends) is plugged into the Openreach modem’s port, and the other end into the hub’s red WAN port (or yellow Ethernet port 4 if there is no WAN port) until it clicks; then make sure the hub is set to Full Fibre mode.
    2. Fibre: make sure the broadband cable (grey ends) is plugged in correctly, and the filter too if you use one.

  6. Purple

    Your hub is connected to the EE mobile network through Hybrid Connect. This may be because your broadband isn’t set up yet, or because there is an issue with your broadband.

    BT’s page gives no step for this light.

  7. Red

    There’s a problem somewhere.

    What BT says to do

    1. Turn the hub off and on again with the Power button.
    2. If the light still doesn’t turn blue, press the factory reset button with a paper clip; if that doesn’t fix it, contact BT.

  8. No light

    The power is off or the lights have been turned off in the Hub Manager.

    What BT says to do

    1. Full Fibre: make sure the Openreach modem is plugged in at the mains and all its lights are on.
    2. Fibre: check the hub is plugged in and switched on, and that its lights haven’t been turned off in the Hub Manager; if that doesn’t fix it, contact BT.

  9. WPS button

    WPS light flashing blue

    The hub is waiting for you to press the WPS button on your computer or device (you have two minutes).

    What BT says to do

    1. Press WPS on the device you are connecting.

  10. WPS button

    WPS light flashing red

    The WPS connection didn’t work.

    1. Give it a couple of minutes and try again.
