TV standby or power light blinking: what it means on Sony, Philips, Panasonic, TCL and Hisense
27 light states from the makers’ own support sites. A Sony LED blinking red: count the flashes, unplug for two minutes, then call Sony with the count — Sony does not publish what 2, 5 or 6 flashes mean. A Panasonic Fire TV blinking red: an SOS shutdown. A Philips LED flashing red or white with no picture: the TV cannot start. Pick the brand, the colour and how it blinks.

- Sony Red LED blinkingSony lists a red-blinking LED under troubleshooting and asks you to count the flashes: they come in groups with a three-second gap between them, and the count is what Sony Customer Support needs.
- Sony White LED on or blinkingNormal.
- Sony Cyan (light blue) LED blinkingNormal, on models with an illumination LED: a phone, tablet or other mobile device is connecting to the TV over the home network.

No light state matches all of those. Try “Any” on one choice. Watch the light for half a minute: a light that blinks while the TV starts and then stops is different from one that never stops.
TCL, Hisense and some Philips and Panasonic pages do not name the light’s colour, so those states match any colour you pick.
By brand
What these pages cannot do
- They give no repair instructions of their own. Each state page repeats only the maker’s steps (usually: unplug, wait, try another wall socket) and the maker’s own line on when to contact its service. Nothing here asks you to go inside the TV.
- They cannot decode a blink count the maker keeps to itself. Sony asks owners to count red flashes and pass the count to its support; it does not publish what each count means, and neither page here guesses.
- They cover the model ranges each maker’s page names. Panasonic’s colour table is for its Fire TV models; Philips’s pages exclude TVs sold in the USA, Canada and Mexico; TCL and Hisense tables are for their Roku TVs.
Left out, and why
A brand gets pages when its own site documents at least 4 TV light states and we could read them. These were not used:
- Samsung — Samsung’s own page documents three light states, one short of the four a brand page needs here. What it says: red standby light on with the TV off is normal standby (if the TV then will not turn on, rule out the remote, then request service); light off means no power, or the TV is on with a black screen; light blinking means something is wrong with the TV. For blinking, Samsung says to plug the TV into an outlet you know works, without a surge protector, and if it still blinks, to request service. HTTP 200. www.samsung.com Checked 2026-09-29.
- LG — LG’s help library answers HTTP 403 to a plain fetch and HTTP 200 in a rendering browser. The TV power pages we could read document only two states: standby light on in standby, and off (no power, or the indicator switched off in settings). - Vizio — Vizio’s support site answered HTTP 403 (a bot check) to every fetch, so its flashing-power-light article could not be read. support.vizio.com Checked 2026-09-29.
- Toshiba — Toshiba’s European TV manuals are PDFs (HTTP 200) whose text we could not extract reliably. The readable fragments mention only the standby LED lit in standby and blinking during a channel search, fewer than four states we could confirm. toshiba-tv.com Checked 2026-09-29.
- Sharp — Sharp USA’s Roku TV power article (HTTP 200) documents two states: no LED and no picture (check the plug, the power strip and the outlet), and LED on with no picture and no remote response (power off for 30 seconds, then on). support.sharpusa.com Checked 2026-09-29.
