What the light on your PS5, Xbox or Nintendo Switch means, and on its controller
29 lights on 3 makers’ consoles, controllers and docks, each from the maker’s own support page. On a PS5 or PS4, orange is rest mode and a light that stays blue or keeps blinking white means the console has frozen (unplug it for 3 minutes). On a Switch dock, green only means the picture is going to the TV: it is not a charging light. Microsoft names almost no colours for the Xbox, so its lights are found by what they do: flashing, lit, dimmed or dark.

No light matches all of those. Try “Any” on one choice: a light that blinks slowly can look steady at a glance, and Sony’s orange can look yellow.
Where a maker names no colour (most Xbox and Nintendo lights), the light matches any colour you pick; where it names no pattern, any movement.

What these pages cannot do
- They cannot see your console. A light says what the console thinks; the error message on screen, if there is one, says more.
- They carry only what each maker’s page states. No forum nicknames or folklore, no opening the case, no repair the maker does not give: every fault ends with the maker’s own repair or contact route.
- Where a maker names a colour but not the pattern, or the other way round, the page says so instead of filling it in.
Left out, and why
A maker gets pages when its own site documents at least 5 light states. These lights are not here because the maker’s page does not describe them, or the page was gone:
- Xbox Series X|S power-button light in Sleep or Shutdown mode — Microsoft’s power-options page explains Sleep and Shutdown (energy saving) but gives no power-button colour or pattern for either, so we do not describe one. The console lights on our Xbox page are the ones Microsoft does describe: dimmed on purpose, and dark when the console will not start. support.xbox.com: HTTP 200 (text drawn by script; read in a browser). - Xbox controller update problems — The page Microsoft’s controller troubleshooter links for update problems has been withdrawn, so no ‘updating’ light pattern could be read from Microsoft itself. support.xbox.com: HTTP 200, but the page body reads ‘Hey, what happened to this page?’. - DualSense charging light — Sony’s charging page gives a light only for the PS4 DualShock 4 (a slow orange blink) and the PS VR2 Sense and Move controllers. For the PS5 DualSense it says to check the battery under Accessories in the control center, where the battery icon animates while charging; it names no light-bar colour, so we give none. www.playstation.com: HTTP 200.
