U No pan detected

What it means

The cooking zone cannot detect a pan.

Likely cause

The pan is off-centre or does not work on induction.

What you can safely check

Hob: do only the checks the maker gives for that code. A built-in hob is wired in, so where a maker says to cut the power, switch it off at the fuse box (circuit breaker); never lift the hob out of the worktop or open it.

• Reposition the pan on the zone.
• Check the pan suits induction: bring a magnet to its base — if it is attracted, the pan is suitable.

When to call a service engineer

No engineer needed for U.

Er03 Controls held or covered

What it means

A knob or button is being operated continuously, or there is liquid or a pan on the control area.

Likely cause

A spill, a pan or a cloth on the controls.

What you can safely check

Hob: do only the checks the maker gives for that code. A built-in hob is wired in, so where a maker says to cut the power, switch it off at the fuse box (circuit breaker); never lift the hob out of the worktop or open it.

• Clean the control area, or take the pan off it.

When to call a service engineer

On a Smeg cooker’s induction hob, Smeg says Er03 that does not clear needs an engineer from its service centre.

E2 Zone overheating

What it means

The induction coil is too hot: the zone is overheating, often with an empty pan on it.

Likely cause

An empty pan left on a zone; if it persists once cool, Smeg says a faulty coil sensor.

What you can safely check

• Take the pan off and wait for the zone to cool down.

When to call a service engineer

E6 Power board lost power

What it means

A power failure to the hob’s power board.

Likely cause

An interruption in the supply to the board.

What you can safely check

Hob: do only the checks the maker gives for that code. A built-in hob is wired in, so where a maker says to cut the power, switch it off at the fuse box (circuit breaker); never lift the hob out of the worktop or open it.

• Turn the hob off for 5 minutes (at the fuse box on a built-in hob), then back on.

When to call a service engineer

If E6 persists, Smeg says an engineer is needed.
