Xbox controller: Controller Xbox button flashing
The controller is searching for a console to connect to. It flashes after you turn it on, and flashes a few times after you hold its Pair button. Once it is connected, the button stays lit.
Applies to: Xbox Wireless Controller with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. What you see: colour not named by the maker, flashing or blinking. Where: a controller.
What Microsoft says to do
- To pair: press the Pair button on the console, then within 20 seconds press and hold the Pair button on the top of the controller until the Xbox button flashes.
- If it never connects, power-cycle the console: hold its Xbox button for about 10 seconds, unplug the power cable for 30 seconds, plug it back in and turn it on.
- Then try the controller on a USB-C cable (micro-USB for Xbox One controllers) that carries data, not charge-only.
- If it works on the cable, update the controller from Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Controllers & headsets.
If it is still wrong
If none of that connects it, Microsoft says the controller may need replacing: its ‘Request an Xbox controller replacement’ link is on the page. Microsoft: support.xbox.com
