HP laptop: Caps lock blinks 2 long red, 2 short white
The main area (DXE) of the BIOS is corrupted and no recovery copy of the BIOS is available.
Applies to: HP notebook PCs (HP’s article names no model list). HP says the codes identify a variety of issues on HP notebook PCs and does not list models, so check your model with HP Customer Support if the code is not on this page.
What HP says to do
- HP says to recover the BIOS from a USB flash drive: on a second working computer, go to HP Software and Driver Downloads, open your computer’s product page, select BIOS, download the right version and use its HP BIOS Update and Recovery tool to create a recovery USB flash drive.
- HP says to turn off the notebook that needs the recovery and wait 5 to 10 seconds, keep the power cord connected, and insert the USB flash drive.
- HP says to press and hold the Windows key and the B key together, then press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds (on some models the Windows key and the V key), release the power button but keep holding the keys; the HP BIOS Update screen should appear and the recovery start by itself.
HP warns that installing the wrong BIOS could stop the computer working: read the Details section of the download to confirm it applies to your computer.
If HP BIOS Update does not appear or the issue persists, HP says your computer might not support this function or there is a hard drive issue, and to go to HP Customer Support for assistance.
