Laptop power, battery or caps lock light blinking: what it means on Dell, HP, Lenovo and ASUS

56 light states from the makers’ own support sites, 45 of them start-up blink codes. When a laptop will not start, the light often blinks a two-part code: count both parts. A Dell Inspiron battery light blinking 2 amber then 3 white: no memory detected. An HP caps lock light blinking 3 long red then 2 short white: a possible memory failure. A ThinkPad charge light blinking 3 orange then 1 white: error 0286h, integrated graphics. Pick the brand, the light and how it blinks.

Find it by what you see

Counting a code: the first colour is amber on Dell, orange on Lenovo and red (long blinks) on HP; the second is white (short blinks on HP). After the second group comes a longer pause, then it starts again.

Each brand counts its code on a different light and publishes it for a different range of models. Every blink-code page links here.

Dell Inspiron: Dell’s article gives the pattern for Inspiron laptops from 2020 to 2025: amber blinks up to nine times, a 1.5-second pause, white blinks up to nine times, a 3-second pause, then again. Older Inspiron years, XPS, Latitude and Precision each have their own Dell article with a different table.
HP: HP’s article covers HP notebook PCs in general and does not list models. Some models also beep, but HP says audible codes are not supported on all models.
Lenovo ThinkPad: The code shows on the charge (battery) indicator. Lenovo says LED Diag was implemented beginning with ThinkPads manufactured in 2024 and points to the Hardware Maintenance Manual, chapter 4, for your model. IdeaPad, Yoga and Legion laptops are not in this table.
ASUS: ASUS’s FAQ describes the indicators for its notebooks in general; ASUS says the pictures are for reference and to see your laptop’s user manual for details.

What these pages cannot do

They give no repair instructions of their own. The steps on each state page are only the maker’s, as its page states them. Each state page repeats only the maker’s steps a reader can do from outside the laptop (a power reset, a BIOS recovery from USB, cleaning the vents) and the maker’s own support line. Where a maker’s table lists work inside the laptop, such as memory, the page says so and gives the support line instead; nothing here sends you inside the laptop.
They cover the model ranges each maker’s page names. Dell’s table here is for Inspiron laptops from 2020 to 2025; Lenovo’s codes are for ThinkPads made in 2024 or later; HP’s article covers its notebooks without a model list; ASUS’s describes its notebooks in general. The same count can mean something else on another brand or line.
They cannot tell which light your model uses for a code. Check your model’s user guide if the light you see is not the one named.

Left out, and why

A brand gets pages when its own site documents at least 5 laptop light states and we could read them. These were not used:

Apple MacBook (MagSafe light) — Apple’s own pages document three MagSafe connector light states, under the five a brand page needs here. What they say: amber means charging is under way or on hold; green means the battery is fully charged; amber flashing over and over on a MagSafe 3 connector may mean a charging issue. For flashing amber, Apple says to unplug the MagSafe 3 cable from the Mac and the adapter and the adapter from the wall, wipe the port and connector dry and clear of debris, check the adapter’s USB-C port, restart the Mac, reconnect and try again, then try another MagSafe 3 or USB-C cable. MagSafe 3 is on MacBook Pro from 2021 (not the 13-inch M2 of 2022) and MacBook Air from 2022. HTTP 200. support.apple.com Checked 2026-09-29.
Microsoft Surface — Microsoft’s page documents three states of the light on the Surface Connect power connector, under the five a brand page needs here: on (power connected), off, and blinking or flashing. For off or flashing, Microsoft says to disconnect the connector and USB accessories, unplug the power supply from the wall and wait at least 10 seconds, clean the connector with a soft dry lint-free cloth, flip the connector 180 degrees, and try another outlet. Acer — Acer’s knowledge-base article on the battery and power indicator lights sits behind a bot check that answered HTTP 403 to every fetch, so we could not read it and have not used what third-party sites say it contains. community.acer.com Checked 2026-09-29.
Dell XPS, Latitude and Precision — Dell publishes a separate diagnostic-indicator article for each of these lines, each with its own table. Only the Inspiron 2020–2025 table was checked row by row for these pages. Dell’s Latitude article, “Dell Latitude Diagnostic LED and Battery Indicator Codes”, is linked so you can read your own line’s table; it also lists 2 amber, 3 white as no memory detected and 3 amber, 1 white as a CMOS battery failure.
