Dell Inspiron laptop lights: what each colour and blink means

When a Dell Inspiron cannot start, the battery status light (on many models the light on the front edge, or the power button light) blinks a two-part code: amber a number of times, a short pause, then white a number of times, then a longer pause, over and over. Count both groups. Amber 2 then white 3 means no memory detected; amber 3 then white 1 is the CMOS battery. The same light also shows charging and low battery.

Dell’s article gives the pattern for Inspiron laptops from 2020 to 2025: amber blinks up to nine times, a 1.5-second pause, white blinks up to nine times, a 3-second pause, then again. Older Inspiron years, XPS, Latitude and Precision each have their own Dell article with a different table. Dell says the diagnostic indicators may vary across different models and to see the documentation of your Dell laptop for device-specific information, so check your model.
