Switch controller: Player lights do not light after pairing

Our drawing, not the real controller: no light, off.

Once paired, the player light for the controller’s number should stay lit. If it stays dark on a paired, registered controller, Nintendo treats it as a fault to work through.

Applies to: Joy-Con 2 and Joy-Con on Switch 2, Switch, Switch – OLED Model and Switch Lite. What you see: no light, off. Where: a controller.

What Nintendo says to do

  1. Install the latest system update and restart the console.
  2. Attach the Joy-Con to the console and check the screen confirms it is attached; check its charge in the Controllers menu.
  3. Detach them and press a button such as A to wake them.
  4. If they are still dark: attach and detach them two or three times, reset with the SYNC button then press another button, and make sure the controller firmware is up to date.
  5. Try another set of Joy-Con if you have one, to see whether it is the controller or the console.

If it is still wrong

If a Joy-Con still shows no light, Nintendo asks you to set up a service request for the Joy-Con on its website. Nintendo: support.nintendo.com

We give no step that Nintendo does not give: do not open the controller yourself.
