Omron blood pressure monitor symbols: what each one on the screen means
Omron’s instruction manuals for its US 5 Series (BP7250) and 10 Series (BP7450) upper arm monitors name every symbol below. Each one has Omron’s own words in quotation marks, what Omron says to do, and a link to our page on the same symbol across other makes.

Which models this covers
Both manuals are Omron Healthcare’s US editions, read on omronhealthcare.com. The two models share almost every symbol; the user ID and TruRead symbols are on the BP7450 only, and are marked so. Omron sells many other models, including wrist monitors and AFib models, whose screens can differ — the error table below names E2 and Er because those are the codes the manuals spell out in words; other codes in Omron’s table are printed only as pictures, so they are not listed here.
Each symbol, in Omron’s words
Heartbeat symbol (flashing heart) The monitor is measuring
“Flashes while taking a measurement.”
What Omron says to do: “Remain still and do not talk until the entire measurement process is complete.”
A heart that flashes during the measurement is the normal pulse indicator, not a warning. Omron’s irregular-heartbeat mark is a different drawing and appears with the result, not while the cuff is deflating.

Irregular heartbeat symbol, with a 2 or a 3 An uneven rhythm was detected 2 or more times during this measurement
“Appears when irregular rhythm is detected 2 or more times during a measurement.”
“An irregular heartbeat rhythm is defined as a rhythm that is 25 % less or 25 % more than the average rhythm detected while your monitor is measuring blood pressure.”
“Irregular heartbeat symbol may be displayed when the monitor detects arm movements.”
What Omron says to do: “If it continues to appear, we recommend you to consult with and follow the directions of your physician.”
The number in the drawing is a count: the manual shows the symbol with a 2 for an irregular rhythm detected 2 times, and with a 3 for 3 times or more. The blood pressure and pulse numbers are still shown.

Movement error symbol You moved during the measurement
“Appears with your reading when your body is moving during a measurement.”
What Omron says to do: “If it appears, remove the arm cuff and wait for 2 to 3 minutes. Then, reapply the cuff, remain still and take another measurement.”
Movement can also set off the irregular-heartbeat symbol, by Omron’s own account above, so if both appear together the fix is the same: rest, sit still and measure again.

High symbol The reading is at or above Omron’s 130/80 mmHg line
“Appears if your systolic blood pressure is ≥ 130 mmHg or the diastolic blood pressure is ≥ 80 mmHg.”
“Source: ACC/AHA 2017 High Blood Pressure Clinical Practice Guideline”
What Omron says to do: “NEVER diagnose or treat yourself based on your readings. ALWAYS consult with your physician.”
Omron’s US models have no coloured bar: there is one High symbol, and it needs only one of the two numbers to reach the line. A reading of 128/82 shows High because the lower number is 80 or more.

Memory symbol You are looking at a stored reading, not a new one
“Appears when viewing readings stored in the memory.”
“Your monitor automatically stores up to 60 readings.”
On the BP7250 the newest stored reading is number 1. When the memory is full, the manual says new readings replace the oldest ones.

Average value symbol The numbers are an average of your last 2 or 3 readings
“Flashes when viewing the average of the latest 2 or 3 readings taken within the most recent 10 minute timeframe.”
What Omron says to do: “Set your monitor to the correct date and time before taking a measurement to view the average readings.”
The average only uses readings from the last 10 minutes, so it is a way to smooth out two or three measurements taken in one sitting, not a weekly average.

Deflation symbol The cuff is letting air out
“Appears during cuff deflation.”
This is a progress sign: Omron’s monitor measures while the cuff deflates, and the heartbeat symbol flashes at the same time.

Sync symbol The memory is nearly or completely full and should be sent to the app
“Flashes/appears when your data needs to be transferred because the stored memory is either almost, or completely full.”
What Omron says to do: “Once you pair your monitor with your smart device, transfer your readings immediately before the monitor deletes the oldest reading.”
Nothing is wrong with the measurement. The BP7250 keeps 60 readings and the BP7450 100 per user, and the oldest are overwritten once the memory is full.

Bluetooth ON and Bluetooth OFF symbols Readings are being sent to the phone, or Bluetooth is switched off
“Appears when your readings are being transferred.”
“Appears when Bluetooth is disabled.”
What Omron says to do: “To enable the Bluetooth, press and hold the button for more than 2 seconds.”
The manual says Bluetooth is on by default, and that with it on the readings are sent to the phone within 1 hour after a measurement.

OK symbol Connected to the phone, or the transfer worked
“Flashes when your monitor is connected to your smart device or readings are transferred successfully.”
OK is about the phone connection only; it says nothing about the blood pressure reading.

Low battery symbol (flashing) The batteries are getting low
“Flashes when batteries are low.”
What Omron says to do: “To replace batteries, turn your monitor off and remove all batteries. Then replace with 4 new batteries at the same time.”
Omron also writes that replacing the batteries will not delete earlier readings, but the year flashes afterwards so that you set the date and time again.
Every make: Low battery symbol. Source: Omron — Instruction manual, 5 Series upper arm blood pressure monitor BP7250 (PDF) Checked 2026-10-13.
Depleted battery symbol (steady) The batteries are flat
“Appears when batteries are depleted.”
Omron separates the two battery states: flashing means low, steady means depleted. Both models take 4 AA batteries.

E2 The cuff could not inflate enough, or the reading could not be finished
“You move or talk during a measurement and the arm cuff does not inflate sufficiently.”
“The systolic pressure is above 210 mmHg and a measurement cannot be taken.”
What Omron says to do: “Remain still and do not talk during a measurement. If “E2” appears repeatedly, inflate the arm cuff manually until the systolic pressure is 30 to 40 mmHg above your previous readings.”
Manual inflation is described in the manual’s measuring section: hold the button while the cuff inflates and let go at the pressure you want. The manual says not to inflate above 299 mmHg.

Er The monitor has a fault
“The monitor has malfunctioned.”
Omron’s table says to press the START/STOP button again, and to contact customer service if Er is still shown. Unlike E2, this is not something sitting still will fix.
Every make: Error display. Source: Omron — Instruction manual, 5 Series upper arm blood pressure monitor BP7250 (PDF) Checked 2026-10-13.
Err (while pairing with a phone) Pairing with the app did not work
“If the “Err” symbol appears, follow the instructions in the app.”
The manual prints this note in its pairing steps, so Err here is about the Bluetooth connection, not the blood pressure reading.

User ID symbol (1 or 2) Which person’s memory the reading goes into
Omron BP7450 only
“The user ID number appears when selecting the user”
The BP7450 keeps up to 100 readings for each user, so a reading saved under the wrong number lands in the other person’s history and average.
Every make: User 1 / user 2 selector. Source: Omron — Instruction manual, 10 Series upper arm blood pressure monitor BP7450 (PDF) Checked 2026-10-13.
TruRead symbol TruRead mode is on: three readings will be averaged
Omron BP7450 only
“Appears when a measurement is taken if the TruRead mode is enabled.”
“The TruRead mode automatically takes 3 consecutive readings at intervals you can customize and displays the average.”
While TruRead runs, the pulse area of the screen counts the seconds to the next reading. TruRead is Omron’s own feature, so other makers have no matching symbol.
