A&D blood pressure monitor symbols: what each one on the screen means
A&D’s instruction manual for the UA-611 and UA-651 digital blood pressure monitors names every symbol below. Each one has A&D’s own words in quotation marks, what A&D says to do, and a link to our page on the same symbol across other makes.

All 7 A&D screen symbols at a glance
| On the screen | What A&D’s manual says it means |
|---|---|
Heart mark (blinking) | The monitor is measuring and has found the pulse |

M (memory) | You are looking at stored readings |
Full battery mark | The batteries are fine |

Which models this covers
The manual read here is A&D Company’s English edition for the UA-611 and UA-651, two basic models with the same screen, on A&D’s own site aandd.jp (A&D Medical sells them in the US). Its error symbols are printed only as pictures, so they are not listed here; the troubleshooting advice on moving, cuff fit and batteries is.
Each symbol, in A&D’s words
Heart mark (blinking) The monitor is measuring and has found the pulse
“Appears while measurement is in progress. It blinks when the pulse is detected.”
“Once the pulse is detected, the mark blinks with each pulse beat.”
What A&D says to do: “Measurement is in progress. Remain as still as possible.”
A&D’s heart mark starts blinking once the cuff has finished inflating and begins to deflate; it is the normal sign of a measurement in progress.

I.H.B. (irregular heartbeat symbol) An irregular heartbeat was detected during the measurement
“I.H.B. appears when an irregular heartbeat is detected. It may light when a very slight vibration like shivering or shaking is detected.”
“An irregular heartbeat is defined as a heartbeat that varies by 25% from the average of all heartbeats during the blood pressure measurement.”
What A&D says to do: “It is important that you are relaxed, remain still and do not talk during measurements.” “We recommend contacting your physician if you see this symbol frequently.”
A&D’s manual says the monitor still gives a blood pressure and pulse reading when an irregular heartbeat occurs. Shivering can light I.H.B. too, so a cold room is worth ruling out.

M (memory) You are looking at stored readings
“Previous measurements stored in memory.”
“The device automatically stores up to thirty blood pressure and pulse measurements in memory.”
Holding the START button with the monitor off shows the average first, then each stored reading by its data number, newest first.

Full battery mark The batteries are fine
“The battery power indicator during measurement.”
A steady full battery during a measurement needs nothing from you.

Low battery mark (blinking) The batteries are low
“The battery power is low when it blinks.”
What A&D says to do: “Replace all batteries with new ones when the mark blinks.”
A&D’s troubleshooting table adds that if the batteries are completely drained the mark does not appear at all: a blank screen when you press START is the flat-battery sign.

Pressure bar indicator How far the cuff pressure has got
“A pressure bar indicator is displayed, as in the figure at the right, during inflation.”
“The indicator monitors the progress of pressure during measurement.”
The same bar beside the screen is used after the measurement for the WHO classification, so what it means depends on when you look at it.

WHO classification indicator (bar segments) Which WHO blood pressure category the reading falls into
“Each segment of the bar indicator corresponds to the WHO blood pressure classification.”
“The indicator displays a segment, based on the current data, corresponding to the WHO classification.”
What A&D says to do: “Do not self-diagnose the measurement results and start treatment by yourself. Always consult your doctor for evaluation of the results and treatment.”
The manual labels the six segments: severe hypertension, moderate hypertension, mild hypertension, high normal, normal and optimal.
