Beurer blood pressure monitor symbols: what each one on the screen means

Beurer’s instructions for use for the BM 54 upper arm monitor name every symbol below. Each one has Beurer’s own words in quotation marks, what Beurer says to do, and a link to our page on the same symbol across other makes.

Check your monitor’s manual — makers differ.

Which models this covers

The manual read here is the BM 54, a Bluetooth model with two user memories, read on Beurer’s own document server. Other Beurer models share many of these symbols but not all: the BM 28 manual, for one, adds a resting indicator. Beurer’s error table prints each error message as a picture rather than as text, so the two errors below are named by what the manual says caused them.

Each symbol, in Beurer’s words

Pulse symbol (heart) The monitor has found your pulse and is measuring

“As soon as a pulse is found, the pulse symbol will be displayed.”

What Beurer says to do: “To avoid falsifying the measurement, it is important to remain still during the measurement and not to speak.”

This is the normal heart symbol. The arrhythmia warning is a different symbol, shown after the measurement.

Cardiac arrhythmia symbol The monitor noticed a possible disruption of the heart rhythm while measuring

“This device can identify potential disruptions of the heart rhythm when measuring”

“Arrhythmia can only be determined through an examination by your doctor.”

What Beurer says to do: “Please ensure that you rest for 5 minutes beforehand and do not speak or move during the measurement.” “If the symbol appears frequently, please consult your doctor.”

Beurer’s BM 54 manual gives no threshold for this symbol. Its first step is to measure again after 5 minutes’ rest.

Risk indicator (coloured scale) Which blood pressure category the reading falls into, by Beurer’s table

“The classification on the display and the scale on the device show which category the recorded blood pressure values fall into.”

“the graphical classification on the device always shows the higher category”

“Source: WHO, 1999 (World Health Organization)”

What Beurer says to do: “It is important to consult your doctor regularly for advice.”

Beurer’s table is not the same as Omron’s or Microlife’s: on this table 135/85 is “High normal” and green, while Omron’s US models would show High for it.

User memory symbol (user 1 or user 2) Which of the two memories the reading is saved in

“Now select the desired user memory by pressing the M1 or M2 memory buttons.”

“If you do not select a user memory, the measurement is stored in the most recently used user memory.”

Every saved reading carries its date and time, and the manual says the oldest is overwritten once there are more than 60.

Average, morning and evening symbols The numbers are an average, not a single reading

“The average value of all saved measured values in this user memory is displayed.”

“The average value of the morning measurements for the last 7 days is displayed (morning: 5 a.m. – 9 a.m.).”

“The average value of the evening measurements for the last 7 days is displayed (evening: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.).”

Pressing M1 or M2 again moves from the overall average to the morning and evening averages and then to single readings, so check which symbol is showing before reading the numbers.

Battery replacement symbol The batteries need changing

“If the battery replacement symbol is permanently displayed, you can no longer perform any measurements and must replace all batteries.”

“The batteries are almost empty.”

What Beurer says to do: “Insert new batteries into the device.”

The BM 54 takes four AAA batteries, and Beurer says not to use rechargeable ones. The manual says saved readings are kept, but the date and time must be set again.

Bluetooth® symbol The monitor is trying to send readings to the beurer HealthManager app

“The Bluetooth® symbol on the display flashes and the blue LED lights up.”

“The Bluetooth® symbol stops flashing as soon as a connection is established.”

The manual says the monitor tries to connect for about 30 seconds; if no connection is made, the symbol goes out and the readings stay in the monitor’s memory, from where the manual says they can be sent later.

Error: no pulse recorded (pictured in the manual) The monitor could not record a pulse, or you moved or spoke

“Unable to record a pulse.”

“You moved or spoke during the measurement.”

What Beurer says to do: “Please wait one minute and repeat the measurement.” “Ensure that you do not speak or move during the measurement.”

The same table lists a cuff that was not fitted properly as a cause, with a pointer back to the manual’s cuff-fitting steps.

Error: inflation pressure too high (pictured in the manual) The cuff was pumped above 300 mmHg

“The inflation pressure is higher than 300 mmHg.”

What Beurer says to do: “Please take another measurement to check whether the cuff can be correctly inflated.”

Beurer’s manual also says to make sure nothing is pressing on the cuff line and that the line is not bent.

These pages report what each maker’s manual says and quote it wherever health is involved. They do not diagnose anything and are not medical advice; only your own monitor’s manual describes your model.
