Virgin Media Hub 5 and Hub 4 lights: what each colour means

It has one status light (on the Hub 4 it circles the top quarter of the hub). Virgin Media gives the Hub 5 and Hub 4 the same answer for every colour except white: a solid white light means “working normally” on the Hub 5 but only “just switched on” on the Hub 4, where the normal light is a dimmed white.

1. Solid white (Hub 5)

2. Solid white (Hub 4)

   On a Hub 4 this is normal for the first minute or so after you turn it on. After that the working light is a dimmed white.

3. Dimmed white (Hub 4)

   Everything is okay: this is what a Hub 4 shows when it is working normally.

4. Flashing white

   The Hub is booting up.

   What Virgin Media says to do

   1. Wait at least 5 minutes for it to finish.
   2. Meanwhile, check that every cable into and out of the Hub is pushed in firmly.

5. Solid red

   There may be a problem with the cable connections, or the Hub is too hot.

   What Virgin Media says to do

   1. Switch the Hub’s power off at the wall.
   2. Stand it upright in the open with its vents uncovered, away from heat, and check the cables are undamaged and pushed in firmly.
   3. Leave it 15 minutes to cool, then switch it back on and give it 5 to 10 minutes to start.
   4. Still red and not warm to the touch? press the pinhole factory reset button for 10 seconds with the tip of a pen and leave the Hub 5 to 10 minutes to start up. You should then see solid white. If that doesn’t fix it, Virgin Media points you to its broadband service test.

6. Flashing red

   The Hub has finished starting up but could not register on the Virgin Media network.

   What Virgin Media says to do

   1. Switch the Hub’s power supply off at the wall.
   2. Check every cable into and out of the Hub is undamaged and pushed in firmly.
   3. Switch it back on and let it start up for 5 to 10 minutes; the light goes from flashing white to solid white when it’s done.
   4. Still flashing red? press the pinhole factory reset button for 10 seconds with the tip of a pen and leave the Hub 5 to 10 minutes to start up. You should then see solid white. If that doesn’t fix it, Virgin Media points you to its broadband service test.

7. Solid green

   The Hub is in modem mode and is not sharing Wi-Fi. If you set this yourself, you are probably using your own router with it.

   1. Take the Hub out of modem mode in its settings, or press the pinhole factory reset button for 10 seconds with a pen tip and leave it 5 to 10 minutes; the light turns white when done.

8. Flashing green (slowly)

   The Hub is downloading a software update. It takes a few minutes to reboot once the download finishes.

9. Flashing blue

   Slow flashing for up to 2 minutes: the WPS button was pressed and the Hub is waiting for a device. Rapid flashing: the WPS connection failed.

   What Virgin Media says to do

   1. If it flashed rapidly, try WPS again.

10. Solid blue (20 seconds)

    A WPS connection worked; the light stays solid blue for about 20 seconds.

11. No light

    The Hub is off.

    What Virgin Media says to do

    1. Check the power supply is firmly in at the wall and at the back of the Hub, the wall socket is switched on and the Hub’s power button is in the ‘on’ position.
    2. Once it has power it can take 5 to 10 minutes to start; the light turns white when done.
