Ring Video Doorbell light: what each colour and pattern means

A Ring doorbell talks through the light circle around its button. Ring says every doorbell model shows the same patterns unless it names an exception, so the colour (white or blue) and the movement (spinning, filling, flashing, only one side lit) are what to read. White is mostly setup and software; blue is mostly the button, calls and charging.

The light is the circle around the front button. On battery doorbells charged by cable, part of the circle lights to show how far the charge has got. Doorbells with a Quick Release Battery Pack do not show the charging pattern.

1. White light spinning in a circle

   The doorbell is in setup mode. The pattern stops by itself after 10 minutes.

2. Blue light moving upward

   During setup, the doorbell is connecting to your Wi-Fi network.

3. Four corner blue lights flashing

   Setup finished successfully.

4. White light flashing on the right side

   Setup failed: the doorbell could not connect to your home Wi-Fi network. Ring names two common causes: the doorbell is too far from the router, or the Wi-Fi name contains special characters.

5. White light flashing on top

   Setup failed because of a problem with the Wi-Fi password.

6. White light flashing on the left side

   Setup failed after the doorbell joined your Wi-Fi: it could not reach Ring’s servers or the internet.

7. White circle flashing repeatedly

   The doorbell is updating its firmware (its own software).

8. Blue light spinning clockwise

   Someone pressed the doorbell button.

9. Solid blue circle

   The doorbell is in an active call with its speaker on: someone is talking through it from the Ring app.

10. Upper right quarter of the blue circle flashing

    The doorbell is charging and is between 0 and 25% full.

    The doorbell is charging and is between 25 and 50% full.

14. Blue circle flashing slowly

    On battery-powered doorbells (except the Door View Cam) it means a factory reset is under way. On the Video Doorbell Wired, Wired Doorbell 2K, Battery Doorbell Plus and Battery Doorbell 2K Plus it can also mean the doorbell is powering up.

17. Solid white circle

    The doorbell is idle: nothing is happening and nothing is wrong.

    Hardwired Ring doorbells, and battery doorbells that are wired in. Ring gives no step for this light.

18. Lights off

    The doorbell is idle. On a battery doorbell running on its battery alone, no light is the normal resting state.

    Battery-powered Ring doorbells that are not wired in. Ring gives no step for this light.

19. Red light flashing at the bottom

    The doorbell is not getting enough power. Ring’s power guide adds that a hardwired doorbell that will not power on, loses power at night or after a press, or shows a poor power rating in the Ring app may have the same problem.
