Energy efficiency class arrow (A to G)

The model’s energy efficiency class. A is the most efficient, G the least. The letter comes from an efficiency index worked out differently for each product group, so an A on a fridge and an A on a TV are not the same amount of energy.

Where the regulations differ

Every group uses the same seven letters, but each regulation sets its own index and thresholds, quoted below. Tyres do not use this arrow: their scale is A to E and is about rolling resistance, not electricity (see the tyre fuel-efficiency page). A washer-dryer label prints two scales side by side: complete wash-and-dry cycle on the left, washing cycle on the right.

What the number measures: The Energy Efficiency Index EEI_W: weighted energy use of the eco 40-60 programme compared with a standard figure for a machine of that capacity.
Unit: letter A–G (index EEI_W, no unit)
Test condition: eco 40-60 programme at rated capacity, half and a quarter of rated capacity.
Classes: A: EEI_W ≤ 52 · B: 52–60 · C: 60–69 · D: 69–80 · E: 80–91 · F: 91–102 · G: > 102

What the number measures: The Energy Efficiency Index of the eco programme compared with a standard figure for that number of place settings.
Unit: letter A–G (index EEI, no unit)
Test condition: eco programme at rated capacity.
Classes: A: EEI < 32 · B: 32–38 · C: 38–44 · D: 44–50 · E: 50–56 · F: 56–62 · G: ≥ 62

On a fridge or freezer label

What the number measures: The energy efficiency index: annual energy use compared with a standard figure for the appliance’s compartments and volumes.
Unit: letter A–G (index EEI, no unit)
Test condition: energy tests at 16 °C and 32 °C room temperature (Annex IV).
Classes: A: EEI ≤ 41 · B: 42 < EEI ≤ 51 · C: 51 < EEI ≤ 64 · D: 64 < EEI ≤ 80 · E: 80 < EEI ≤ 100 · F: 100 < EEI ≤ 125 · G: EEI > 125 (as printed in Table 1)

What the number measures: The EEI: weighted energy per drying cycle of the eco programme compared with a standard figure.
Unit: letter A–G (index EEI, no unit)
Test condition: eco programme, three cycles at full load and four at half load.
Classes: A: EEI ≤ 43 · B: 43–50 · C: 50–60 · D: 60–70 · E: 70–85 · F: 85–100 · G: > 100

What the number measures: EEI_label: on-mode power relative to the screen area. The label prints one class for SDR content and a second for HDR content.

Test condition: standardised moving-picture test sequences of dynamic broadcast content.

What the number measures: Total mains efficacy: useful light output in lumens per watt of on-mode power, times a factor for the light-source type.
Unit: letter A–G (efficacy in lm/W)
Test condition: useful luminous flux divided by on-mode power, η_TM = (Φ_use / P_on) × F_TM.
Classes: A: ≥ 210 lm/W · B: 185–210 · C: 160–185 · D: 135–160 · E: 110–135 · F: 85–110 · G: < 85

What the number measures: The EEI in 1/W, calculated from the battery-endurance test result, the battery’s nominal voltage and its rated capacity. Smartphones and tablets have separate tables.
Unit: letter A–G (index EEI in 1/W)
Test condition: the battery-endurance test of Annex IV, point 1, from a full charge until the device switches off.
Classes: Smartphones A: EEI > 2.70 … G: ≤ 1.20 · Slate tablets A: EEI > 7.90 … G: ≤ 2.59
