Ring doorbell: Red light flashing at the bottom
The doorbell is not getting enough power. Ring’s power guide adds that a hardwired doorbell that will not power on, loses power at night or after a press, or shows a poor power rating in the Ring app may have the same problem.
Applies to: Wired Ring doorbells that are not battery-powered. What you see: red, flashing or blinking, only part of the ring (a side, half, a quarter), on the light ring or button.
What Ring says to do
Wiring and power. Ring links this light, on at least some models, to the doorbell’s wiring or power. The steps here are only Ring’s own, as its page states them, including any advice to use a qualified or certified electrician; semiatic gives no wiring instructions of its own.
- Ring’s own electrical warning comes first: turn off power to the installation area at the circuit breaker or fuse box before any work, and take care with electrical wiring. Ring says installation by a qualified electrician may be required where you live, and that local laws and building codes may require permits or professional installation.
- Ring says to check that your in-home chime is compatible with your doorbell. Ring’s 2K and 4K wired doorbells are not compatible with any in-home chime and come with a Chime Kit Mini instead.
- Ring says to check that every wire is secured under the correct terminal screw, against Ring’s hardwiring instructions for your model, and that the wire is 16- to 20-gauge.
- Ring says to read the voltage (V) and volt-amp (VA) numbers on the transformer and compare them with what the doorbell needs: 16–24 V AC and 10–40 VA for a wired doorbell, 8–24 V AC and 5–40 VA for a battery-powered one, and 16 V AC, 30 VA where several doorbells share one transformer. If the transformer falls short, Ring says a new one is needed.
- Ring warns that lighting transformers, or other power sources that are not Ring-approved, may damage the doorbell.
