H2 in a diamond

Hydrogen gas. On a vehicle, an H2 diamond means it is refuelled with hydrogen.

What to do

Refuel only from a nozzle whose diamond shows the same symbol as the one by your vehicle's filler. H2 is not interchangeable with CNG, LNG or LPG.

Can my car use it?

“You will only need to match the label of your vehicle with the corresponding label on the fuel pump.”

“The European legislation requires the labels only for new vehicles placed on the market for the first time or registered as of 12 October 2018.”

Check your vehicle's manual or the label inside the filler flap. We do not say which makes or models can use this fuel.

In detail

  • UK law: 'the symbol for hydrogen gas according to the relevant standard or equivalent national legislation of the fuel delivered is "H2"'.
  • The diamond is a 90-degree-angled diamond, at least 13 mm wide on a nozzle, a vehicle or in a manual and at least 30 mm on the dispenser (SI 2019/421, Schedule 1, Part 3).
  • CEN names ISO 14687 among the quality standards for gaseous fuels.

What it does not mean

The identifier carries no pressure or purity figure, and a diamond never means petrol or diesel.
