Google Nest and Google Home speaker lights: what each colour means

Google’s Nest Help page has a table per speaker. Nest Mini, Home Mini and Nest Audio show four small lights in a row; the Google Home Speaker has a light ring. The same colour can mean different things on the two layouts, and several lights differ with Gemini for Home (rolling out since October 2025) and Google Assistant.

Count the lights: four dots in a row (Nest Mini, Home Mini, Nest Audio, Home Max) or a full ring (Google Home Speaker). The model name is on the base of the speaker and in the Google Home app.

1. 4 solid orange lights

   The microphone is off: the assistant can’t detect “Hey Google” or respond.

2. Pulsing orange light

   The microphone is off: the voice assistant can’t detect “Hey Google” or respond.

5. White lights slowly pulse

   Your speaker is ready to set up. On a speaker already set up, the same slow white pulse means an alarm or a timer is ringing.

6. White lights run back and forth

   Your speaker is connecting to Wi-Fi.

   Your speaker is downloading or installing an update.

   Your speaker is reminding you that a notification is available.

   The voice assistant is listening.

10. Rainbow or multicoloured lights light up from left to right

    Your speaker is booting up.

    Nest Audio, Home Mini, and Nest Mini (multicoloured or white, depending on the speaker’s colour). Google’s page gives no step for this light.

11. Orange lights count down

    Your speaker is confirming that you want to perform a factory reset. The reset is confirmed when all 4 orange lights are on.

12. Purple lights run, pulse or flash twice
