Side stand indicator
The side stand (kickstand) is down. On the bikes that have this lamp, the stand is also wired to the engine: selecting a gear with the stand down stops the engine or blocks the starter.

How urgent is it? What each maker says
- Lit: Deal with it before riding off. Bajaj (Dominar 250): “It glows when Side stand is down. Under condition - side stand down & vehicle is in gear, self start will be disabled.”
- Lit, and the engine stops when first gear is selected: Deal with it before riding off. Royal Enfield (Himalayan 450): The troubleshooting table lists “Side stand indicator is glowing in the cluster” with the remedy “Side stand should be kept up right”.
- “Side stand monitoring faulty” message: Have it checked soon. BMW Motorrad (R 1250 GS Adventure): “Onward journey possible. Stop engine when stationary! Have checked by workshop.” The manual adds that the engine is switched off when the speed falls below 5 km/h (3 mph) and the ride cannot be resumed.
What it is for
It explains a stall that otherwise looks like a fault. Royal Enfield’s Himalayan 450 manual says the bike may start with the side stand down, but the engine will turn off when a gear is engaged: “this side stand cut-off feature is provided for rider safety”.
These pages report what each maker’s owner’s manual says, and quote it wherever safety is involved. They are not a diagnosis and add no riding advice of our own; your own bike’s manual is the authority for your model.
- What it looks like
- A lamp or display symbol for the stand. Our drawing shows a bike side-on with its stand leg down; the illustrations in the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 manual show the words “Side Stand” on the display.
- Colour
- Red on the Bajaj Dominar 250, whose specification table lists “Side Stand Indicator LED-RED”. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 manual does not state its colour.
- Names makers use
- Side stand indicator (Royal Enfield, Bajaj); “Side stand monitoring faulty” message (BMW Motorrad, a fault message, not a stand-down lamp)
Where makes differ
Only two of the five makers’ manuals read show a stand-down lamp: Royal Enfield (Himalayan 450) and Bajaj (Dominar 250). Yamaha’s MT-09, Triumph’s Tiger 1200 and BMW’s R 1250 GS Adventure manuals describe a side stand switch without a lamp; Yamaha calls its switch part of the “ignition circuit cut-off system”. BMW shows a message only when the side stand switch itself is faulty.
What it does not mean
It does not mean the stand or the bike is broken: it is lit because the stand is down. The BMW message about side stand monitoring is a different thing, a fault in the switch.
