Neutral indicator (N)
The gearbox is in neutral: no gear is selected, so the engine is not driving the rear wheel. It is information, not a fault.

How urgent is it? What each maker says
- Lit: Information only. Bajaj (Dominar 250): “When the transmission is in Neutral, Neutral indicator will glow.”
- Lit: Information only. Yamaha (MT-09, 2021): “This indicator light comes on when the transmission is in the neutral position.”
- Lit with the ignition on: Information only. Triumph (Tiger 1200): “The neutral warning light indicates when the transmission is in neutral (no gear selected).”
What it is for
It tells you the bike will not move off when you let the clutch out, and it matters for the side stand cut-out: Triumph’s Tiger 1200 handbook says that if the side stand is extended while the engine is running and the transmission is not in neutral, the engine will stop regardless of clutch position.
These pages report what each maker’s owner’s manual says, and quote it wherever safety is involved. They are not a diagnosis and add no riding advice of our own; your own bike’s manual is the authority for your model.
- What it looks like
- A capital N on its own lamp in the row of indicator lights; bikes with a gear display usually show N there as well.
- Colour
- Green on the Bajaj Dominar 250, whose specification table lists “Neutral Indicator LED-GREEN”. The Yamaha, Royal Enfield and Triumph manuals read do not state its colour, and on the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure it is the letter N in the gear display rather than a separate lamp.

Where makes differ
Royal Enfield’s Hunter 350 has a neutral lamp and a gear display that shows “0” in neutral, while the Himalayan 450 display shows “N”. Yamaha’s MT-09 shows both a neutral lamp and N in its gear display. The BMW R 1250 GS Adventure manual shows no separate lamp: the gear display reads N in neutral.
What it does not mean
It does not mean the engine is off, and it is not a warning: a lit N does not mean anything is wrong.

No standard we could read defines these motorcycle lamps — UN Regulation No. 60 and ISO 2575 cover motorcycle tell-tales, but neither could be read when we checked, so this meaning is taken from 5 makers’ own manuals and support pages, each fetched and read on the date shown:
