COSMOS ORGANIC and COSMOS NATURAL

COSMOS ORGANIC: at least 95 % of the physically processed agro-ingredients are organic and at least 20 % of the whole product is organic (10 % for rinse-off products, non-emulsified watery products and products that are at least 80 % mineral). COSMOS NATURAL: the product meets the standard’s rules on ingredients and processes, with no minimum organic content. Both: the finished product and its ingredients are not tested on animals by the maker or anyone it induces to do so, except ingredient tests required by non-cosmetic law.

Who awards it

COSMOS-standard AISBL, set up by BDIH (Germany), Cosmebio and Ecocert (France), ICEA (Italy) and the Soil Association (UK); products are certified by approved certification bodies. The COSMOS signatures are registered trademarks.

What it does not certify

It does not certify that a COSMOS NATURAL product contains any organic ingredient at all. It does not certify that a COSMOS ORGANIC product is 95 % organic overall: the 95 % applies to the farm-grown ingredients, while water and minerals count toward the product but can never be organic — which is why the label must print the actual share, such as ‘22% organic of total’.

This page explains what a symbol or mark on the pack means in law or in the scheme’s own rules. It is not advice on whether a product or an ingredient is safe for you or suits your skin: for that, read the product’s warnings and ask a pharmacist or doctor.

What it looks like
The words COSMOS ORGANIC or COSMOS NATURAL, which must appear together with the seal of the member organisation (for example BDIH, Cosmebio, Ecocert, ICEA or the Soil Association), the name of the certification body and a percentage. We do not reproduce any of the seals.
Also called
COSMOS certified; COSMOS organic; COSMOS natural; Ecocert COSMOS; Soil Association COSMOS

Good to know

COSMOS CERTIFIED and COSMOS APPROVED are different signatures, meant for raw materials (with and without organic content) rather than the finished product on the shelf.
